Communication between Feni, Noakhali disrupted as bridge link road collapses

FENI, Sept 3: Due to flood water pressure, the west link road of the newly built Saheber Ghat bridge over the Chhota Feni River in Sonagazi Upazila of the district has developed a big hole, disrupting communications.

The collapse of the link road occurred on Friday (Aug 30) afternoon.  The communication between Sonagazi Upazila of Feni and Noakhali has been suspended.

A visit found the big hole of the link road in the west edge of the bridge. People are coming daily to see the hole in the middle of the link road.

Locals said, blocks and earth beneath the bridge became loose because of recent deadly flood pressure. Now the link road is also breaking.

In this situation, on voluntary basis, locals are trying to prevent the breaking by dumping sand-laden bags.

On information, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) officials joined with them.

Sand bags were dumped on Thursday. But the breaking started again since night.

Locals are suffering serious communication disruption.

On August 26 morning, 23-gate Musapur Regulator (sluice gate) at Companyganj in Noakhali was devoured by the river.

To re-construct the regulator and repair the Saheber Ghat bridge, people of Sonagazi and Companyganj formed human chain.

The bridge linking Sonagazi and Companyganj was built over the river at Tk 74 crore in 2018.

When there was traffic jam in Feni's Mahipal area, Chattogram-bound transports of Noakhali and Laxmipur would move over that bridge.

Former chairman of Char Chandina Samsuddin Khokon said, people of Noakhali and Sonagazi benefitted after construction of the bridge; locals were becoming financially benefited; but due to construction-related corruption and anomalies, the link road of the bridge broke.

A local Abdul Hamid said, the water pressure caused breaking to the bridge as sand was illegally lifted from beneath the bridge.
Action should be taken for protecting the bridge and sand lifting needs to be stopped, he added.

Executive Engineer of RHD-Noakhali Souma Talukdar said, after being informed, he inspected the link road.

An expert team came from Dhaka and inspected the site, he added.

He further said, according to their advice, necessary repairing is being carried out.

According to RHD sources, the bridge construction began in June, 2016. The construction was supposed to be completed on June 30, 2018. Later, the time was extended till June, 2019 due to delay in finishing the construction timely.

The bridge included 11 spans and 55 girders.

On October 1, 2019 former prime minister inaugurated the bridge through video conference.
