384 authorised firearms, above 19,000 rounds of ammo deposited to CMP

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 5:  As many as 384 firearms and more than 19,000 rounds of ammunition registered during the Awami League's rule have been handed over at various police stations in Chattogram.

The authorised weapons and ammunition were deposited in the city's police stations until Sept 3 after the suspension of registration, according to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, or CMP.

A total of 454 weapons were registered by various civilians in the port city over the past 15 and a half years, the CMP said.
Of them, 79 firearm licences were issued to people in Kotwali Thana, five in Bakalia Thana, 26 in Sadarghat Thana, 35 in Chawkbazar Thana, 24 in Chandgaon Thana, 60 in Panchlaish Thana, 93 in Khulshi Thana, 32 in Bayezid Bostami Thana, 35 in Double Mooring Thana, 21 in Halishahar Thana, 12 each in Pahartali and Bandar Thana, three each in Akbarshah and Patenga Thana and seven each in the EPZ and Karnaphuli Thana.

On Aug 25, the interim government published a notice suspending all firearm licences issued to civilians during the toppled Awami League government's term.

The notice also instructed owners to deposit ammunition along with the registered weapons to the concerned police station.

As many as 384 firearms and 19,626 rounds of ammunition have been deposited at the city's various police stations from the issuance of the notice until Sept 3.    —bdnews24.com
