Job seekers block Shahbagh demanding to raise age limit for govt jobs to 35yrs

Hundreds of job seekers on Saturday blocked the Shahbagh Intersection in the capital demanding raise of age-limit from 30 years to 35 years to apply in civil services.

The blockade beginning from 1:00pm halted vehicular movement in and around the intersection for three and half an hour and caused severe sufferings to city dwellers.

Only ambulances were allowed to pass through Shahbagh, while most vehicles were redirected to alternative routes, witnesses said.

During the demonstration, the protesters tried to draw Chief Adviser's attention to the matter by carrying different placards and banners.

The protesters substantiated that nearly 162 countries around the world set 35 years as the minimum age limit for applying for government jobs, and in some countries, it is even more.     

"We have been carrying out this movement for the last 12 years," said Jasim Nayek, Coordinator of the protests, expressing dismay that the previous Awami League government did not realise their 'rational' demand.

"We demand the student-friendly interim government to have raised the age limit to 35 years immediately and issue a government circular," Jasim said.

"We can't apply for civil services after 30 years in our country. But in many countries around the world, the age limit for entry into government jobs is at least 35 years. In some countries, the age limit is open. Many countries, including India, have already made the minimum age of entry into civil services 35 years. We demand that the student-friendly interim government rises the age-limit to at least 35 years," said one of the demonstrators.
