A 38-year-old man who suffered injuries in an explosion and subsequent fire at the SN Corporation shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chittagong, died early Sunday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Ahmad Ullah, 38, manager of SN Corporation Shipbreaking Yard.
Twelve people suffered burn injuries in the explosion on Saturday.
Nazrul Islam, who brought the injured victims to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said that the explosion occurred while the workers were cutting a ship at the yard on Saturday morning.
The injured were initially taken to CMCH and later eight of them were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Ahmad Ullah died on the way to Dhaka.
The remaining seven were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where Dr Tariqul Islam declared their condition as critical.
Among the injured, Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Abul Kashem each suffered 70% burns, Barkatullah sustained 60% burns, Anwar Hossain 25%, Khairul Islam 80%, Al-Amin 80%, and Habib 45%, he said.
The Ministry of Industries formed a committee to investigate the incident.
Additionally, operations at the shipbreaking yard have been suspended until further notice.
On Saturday, Chattogram Medical's burn unit chief Dr Rafiq Uddin Ahmed said that the condition of burnt eight labourers among 12 are critical. They were sent to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka for better treatment.
A huge explosion occurred at about 12:30am on Saturday at the pump room of scrap ship breaking factory at SN Corporation's shipyard situated at the coast of the sea at Shitalpur Tetultola in Sonaichari union under Sitakunda upazila, leaving 12 labourers receiving multiple injuries.
