A speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi on Thursday has convicted a local leader of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and sentenced him to life-term imprisonment for killing a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Natore about two years back.
The court also fined him Tk 10,000, and in default, he has to suffer one more year behind the bar.
He was convicted for killing Zamiul Alim, 22, son of Farhad Shah of Ramsha Kazipur Village under Naldanga Upazila in Natore, who was assistant general secretary of the upazila unit BCL.
Judge of Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Muhammad Mohiduzzaman pronounced the verdict.
The convict is Muhammad Asaduzzaman, former chairman of Naldanga Upazila Parishad and Upazila Unit President of AL.
Two of his brothers identified as Faisal Shah and Alim Al Razi were acquitted as the charge brought against them could not be proved.
Special Public Prosecutor Entazul Haque Babu confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, the accused beat Zamiul Alim and his father Farhad Shah indiscriminately in an arbitration meeting in Amtali Bazar area on September 19, 2022. After days, Zamiul succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on September 23.
Mother of the deceased Zahanara Begum had lodged a case with Naldanga Police Station, and upon completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing three persons on January 31 last.
After examining the recorded depositions of 27 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidence the tribunal handed down the aforesaid verdict.
Asaduzzaman was sacked from the post of upazila chairman and he also lost his party post after the killing incident.
