A 55-member National Citizen Committee was formed on Sunday with Nasiruddin Patwari as the Convener and Akhter Hossen as the Member Secretary aiming to reform the country by consolidating the spirit of the student uprising. The committee was announced at the base of Central Shaheed Minar in the capital in the afternoon.

However, organisers said the committee will be extended later on. Samantha Sharman will act as the Spokesperson of the National Citizen Committee.

Following the announcement of the committee, Samantha issued a press release describing eight main functions of the platform.

According to the press release, the platform aimed to uphold the collective will and democratic aspirations reflected in the student uprising, hold programmes to ensure punishment of those involved in the brutal massacre in July and early August and to create a framework of cooperation and accountability with the interim government to reform of the state. It will cooperate with various social, cultural and political initiatives to integrate people from all walks of life through discussion, exchange of views and public meetings.

The committee will further resist the fascist structures and forces at all levels and hold dialogues with people from different classes and professions, said the press release.

It also intended to formulate necessary policies and implement them to reform the state institutions.

The press release added that one of the key objectives of the platform is to form a Constituent Assembly and conduct a public consultation for the creation of a new democratic constitution.

Leaders of the platform said that they will soon discuss with social, cultural and religious leaders and people of different classes and professions who participated in the student-led uprising at metropolitan, district and upazila levels.

Addressing the rally at the Central Shaheed Minar premises, Convener Nasir said that the committee will work unitedly to eliminate authoritarianism from the country.

He said, "Both domestic and international conspiracies will be collectively resisted by students and citizens."

He sought support from journalists, intellectuals, and people from all walks of life in these efforts and encouraged everyone to assist young people with their wisdom and advice, asserting that the younger generation will play a crucial role in the country's positive reconstruction.

Member Secretary of the Citizen Committee and also former Social Services Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Akhter Hossen said that the people of Bangladesh have been freed from authoritarianism through the popular uprising of students and citizens.

He said, "The Citizen Committee is formed with the goal of building a beautiful Bangladesh. The committee will work unitedly with students and citizens to ensure that authoritarian forces do not rise again."

Ariful Islam Adeeb, Saif Mostafiz, Monira Sharmin, Nahida Sarwar Chowdhury, Sarwar Tushar, Mutasim Billah, Ashraf Uddin Mahdi, Alauddin Mohammad and Anik Roy are members of the Citizen Committee, among others.

Meanwhile, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement coordinators congratulated the newly unveiled platform.

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud wrote on his Facebook account, "May the National Citizen Committee become successful in protecting the spirit of national unity and mass uprising and rebuilding Bangladesh."
