Ex-DMP chief Asaduzzaman, Addl SP Kafi remanded

Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia was placed on a seven-day remand by a Dhaka court on Thursday in a case filed over the custodial death of former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Nuruzzaman Jonny in 'crossfire' in 2015.

Jonny, then general secretary of JCD's Khilgaon Thana unit, was allegedly killed in a  'gunfight' with police in the capital's Khilgaon on January 20 in  2015, a day after his arrest in connection with an arson case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam passed the order after Sub Inspector Golap Mahmud of Khilgaon Police Station; also Investigation Officer (IO) of the case,  produced him before court with a 10-day remand prayer. 

General Registrar Officer (GRO) of Ashraf Ali confirmed the matter to the Daily Observer on Thursday evening.

On the other hand, another  Dhaka court  placed Abdullahel Kafi, an additional superintendent of police, on a five-day remand again in a case filed over the death of university student Sheikh Ashabul Yamin at Savar Bazar bus stand during the quota reform movement on July 18. Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Julhas Uddin passed the order after Md Abdulla Biswas, an inspector of Savar Police Station and the investigation officer of the case, produced him in court seeking a seven-day remand. 

A team of   Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Asaduzzaman from Mohakhali on Wednesday night.

Jonny's father Yakub Ali on September 2 filed the case with Khilgaon Police Station against 62 people including 13 current and former police officers for the killing. Asaduzzaman is one of the accused in the case.
