Three people including a woman have been murdered in separate incidents in three districts - Jhenidah, Satkhira and Pabna, in two days.
JHENIDAH: A cow thief was beaten to death by mob in Maheshpur Upazila of the district early Thursday.
The incident took place in Valaipur Village under the upazila at around 4 am.
The deceased was identified as Rashed Sheikh, 37, son of Mithu Sheikh, a resident of the area.
Rashed's younger brother Rajdul Sheikh and his uncle Bozlur Rahman were also critically injured in the incident.
It was known that Rashed Khan along with three others went to steal a cow from the house of one Razzak at Biswas Para in Valaipur Village. Then, locals chased them and detained three of the four. They were taken to a field at the local primary school and beaten by the mob, leaving Rashed Sheikh dead on the spot and other two injured.
On information, police rescued them and took the injured to a hospital where they are receiving treatment under police protection.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshpur Police Station (PS) Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
CHANDPUR: A man was hacked to death by his son in Haziganj Upazila of the district on Wednesday over a family dispute.
The incident occurred at night in Toragor Village under Ward No. 8 in Haziganj Municipality.
The deceased was identified as Aktar Hossain, 58, a resident of the area.
The accused is Shakib Hossain, 25, son of the deceased.
Taslima Begum, wife of the deceased, said that there was an altercation between the father and the son on Wednesday evening.
Later that night, the son hacked his father with a machete in his room. Hearing screams, the family members rushed to the scene when they saw Shakib coming out from the room.
Aktar Hossain was then rescued and taken to Haziganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred him to Cumilla following the deterioration of his condition.
Later on, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Cumilla, said Dr Md Golam Mawla Noim, health and family planning officer of Haziganj Upazila Health Complex.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police assumed that the murder might have been occurred due to a family dispute.
Haziganj PS OC Md Abdur Rashid confirmed the incident, adding that actions will be taken according to the law.
SANTHIA, PABNA: A woman was beaten to death allegedly by her husband in Santhia Upazila of the district on Wednesday evening.
The incident took place at Japan Tower adjacent to the Kashinathpur Health Centre in the upazila at around 7 pm.
Deceased Hafsa Khatun, 30, was the wife of Mehedi Hasan Zia, a resident of the area. She was the daughter of Maulana Nazrul Islam of Kushiara Bagjan Village in Bera Upazila of the district. Hafsa Khatun worked as a teacher at Skylark School in Santhia.
The deceased's family sources said that Hafsa got married with Mehedi Hasan Zia, son of Jahid Hossain of Tangbari Village under Aminpur PS in the district, about 15 years back. However, Zia kept pressurising on Hafsa to bring him money from her parents as dowry. Following this, the couple had an altercation on Wednesday evening. At one stage of the altercation, Zia beat up Hafsa mercilessly and strangled her to dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The deceased's father lodged a murder case with Santhia PS in this connection.
Following this, the law enforcers arrested the accused Zia at night and sent him to the jail on Thursday morning following a court order.
Santhia PS OC Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident.
