A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to jail after his four-day remand was over.

Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury was placed on remand in connection with the killing of Sumon Sikder, 31, at Badda in the capital during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement last month.
As his four-day remand was over, he was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on Sunday. Then the investigation officer of the case pleaded to the court to keep the accused detained in jail until the investigation into the case was over.

Responding to the plea, court of the Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Saifuzzaman ordered to send him to jail.

On July 19 last, Sumon Sikder was killed in indiscriminate shootings on Pragati Sarani, adjacent to the north side of Fuji Tower at Badda during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Later, being the plaintiff, Masuma, mother of the Sumon Sikder, filed a murder case with Badda Police Station against Sheikh Hasina and 179 others.

Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury was arrested by the Detective Branch of police from Gulshan in the capital  at night on September 10. He was produced before the CMM court on the following day. The IO of the case pleaded to the court to place the accused on a 10-day remand. After   hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider placed him on a four-day remand.

He was appointed Sheikh Hasina's energy adviser after Awami League came to power in 2009 and served in the position till August 5. Earlier he went on retirement in 2002 after serving different ministries as secretary.
