Saiful succeeds in farming Saudi Arabian dates

JOYPURHAT, Sept 15: In cultivating 10 Saudi Arabian species of date grower, Saiful Islam of Munjia Village in Akkelpur Upazila of the district has been successful.

His date-farming has already drawn attention of all locals.

A visit found ripe and green date fruits hanging from plants at his orchard; the date species included Mariam and Ajwa.  

Saiful Islam said, seeing date-farming on YouTube, he collected 450 saplings of 10 Saudi Arabian species and planted these on about two bighas of land at about Tk 213 lakh three years.

His sale of date has started thinly, selling per kilogram at Tk 800. 

He produced not only fruits but also produced about 10,000 saplings. He sold saplings to interested growers. 

Masud Rana, Belal Hossain, and Farid of Raikhali Village said, seeing Saiful's success, they are also raising date-orchards.

Akkelpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain said, Saiful Islam has been given all technical assistance and advice for ensuring good yielding. 

This first time Saudi date-farming can change scenario of the present agriculture in the upazila, the official added.
