CHATTOGRAM, Sept 15: The interim  government has decided to construct the second unit of state-owned Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) with overseas funding.

Keeping this objective in view the Ministry of Energy and Mineral resources has directed the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to amend the Development of Project Proposal (DPP), ERL Managing Director Sharif Hasnat told the Daily Observer.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral resources has been trying to build the second unit with funding from Kuwait. The interim government has scrapped the proposal for signing MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with controversial S Alam Group for construction of the unit under Public Private Partnership.

Established in 1968 as a private sector entity at Patenga, the ERL refines 1.5 million tonnes of crude oil annually.
