ECNEC Under Interim Govt Holds First Meeting

Approves 4 projects involving Tk 1,222.40 crore

The first meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) under the interim government was held with the Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus in the chair at the Jamuna State Guest House in the city on Wednesday
"The ECNEC has approved four projects worth Tk 1,222.40 crore" Planning and Education Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud told the media after the meeting. 

He said out of this expenditure outlays, Tk 963.82 crore will be financed by the government while Tk 100.16 crore will be funded by external loans and grants, The remaining Tk 158.16 crore will be provided by the respective organisations.
He further said the interim government will look into the status of some projects that remained pending for a long time. 

Moreover Dr Yunus has emphasized for reviewing the ongoing projects and the Annual Development Programme (ADP) to see the real context of the projects and their cost outlays.

He said no new mega projects will be approved in present situation. Only foreign-funded projects will get priority in case of project approval, said the Adviser. Secretary at Chief Advisor's office; confirmed it. He said small people-friendly projects will be taken up now, he said. 

The four projects approval in ECNEC meeting included 'Bakhrabad-Meghnaghat-Haripur Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction (1st Revised)' project. The project will be implemented by Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL) and the cost of the revised project has increased to Tk 1,570.77 crore from Tk 70.63 crore.

The second project the ECNEC approved was 'Drilling of 2 Appraisal and Development Wells (Sundalpur-4 and Srikail-5) and 2 Exploration Wells (Sundarpur South-1 and Jamalpur-1) gas field.
 
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) will implement this project at an estimated cost of Tk 588.4 Crore.

The third project approved at the ECNEC meeting was the Socio-Economic Infrastructure Development project for Women's Empowerment (Phase 2) (2nd Revised Information APA Project)'. 

The estimated cost of the project has increased from Tk 163 crore to Tk 748 crore. The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs.

The 'Provision of Sustainable Social Services project in Chittagong Hill Tracts Area (2nd Phase)' of the Department of Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institutions was the fourth project. It will be implemented by Chattogram Hill Tracts Development Board. 

The cost of this new project has been estimated at Tk 400 crore. UNICEF will give Tk 100 crore as grant to the project. The remaining Tk 299.84 crore will be given by the government.
