International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Adv Tajul Islam on Tuesday said the brutal and discussed murders would be investigated and brought to trial on a priority basis to ensure quick justice for victims.
"The brutal and discussed murders that took place during the July-August students movement in the country would be investigated and brought to trial on a priority basis to ensure quick justice for victims," Chief Prosecutor Adv Tajul Islam commented while talking to journalists at the tribunal.
Prosecutors Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud and Abdullah Al Noman were also present while the Chief Prosecutor briefed the media.
The Chief Prosecutor said the investigation of the brutal murders of Uttara, Jatrabari, including the burning of bodies after the murder of Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, will be tried on priority basis and to be brought to justice in order to ensuring justice for the litigants.
However, the Chief Prosecutor said everything depends on how quickly the tribunal could be reconstituted.
Earlier on September 15, the Chief Prosecutor expressed hoped that the tribunal would be reconstituted within the next week for conducting trial proceedings against accused persons.
International Criminal Tribunal Chairman Justice Md Abu Ahmed Jamadar retired on July 13. Another member judge has returned to the High Court. Currently, there is no judge in the tribunal.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Tajul Islam was appointed as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal on September 7. Besides, four more lawyers have been appointed as prosecutors. They are Md Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud and Abdullah Al Noman.
Though the investigative agency and prosecution team of the International Criminal Tribunal are continuing, but the trial proceedings are at a standstill due to the absence of judges in the tribunal.
