Jadeja, Ashwin steady hosts after Hasan's fiery spell

Despite losing their top six batters to manage only 144 runs, India ended the first day of the opening Test of the two-match series with a commanding 339 for six, thanks to epic innings from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja at Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field-a rare decision at this venue. The last time a team chose to field first here was in 1982, when England did so. After 42 years and 21 matches at this ground, a team won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Bangladesh made no changes to their lineup and were fielding the same XI from their second and final Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Hasan Mahmud's superb opening spell left India in early trouble, dismissing Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6) with the new ball.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant then formed a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but Hasan broke the stand dismissing Pant for 39 in his return to Test cricket after a 21-month absence. Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 48 runs for the fifth wicket before Nahid Rana ended Jaiswal's innings for 56, marking his fifth Test fifty. In the following over, Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Rahul for 16.

After losing three wickets in the second session, India found themselves at 144 for six. However, the pair of Jadeja and Ashwin led a remarkable recovery. Ashwin finished the day unbeaten on 102 runs from 112 balls, marking his sixth Test century. Jadeja remained not out on 86, his 21st Test fifty.

Their unbroken 195-run partnership set a new Indian record for the seventh wicket against Bangladesh surpassing the previous mark of 121 runs set by Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Joshi in 2000.

Of the six Indian wickets, Hasan Mahmud claimed four, while Nahid Rana and Miraz shared the remaining two.
