Students from Jagannath University (JnU) demonstrated on Thursday to voice their opposition to the alarming rise of extrajudicial killings, mob justice and the general chaos in educational institutions.
The General Students' Forum sponsored the demonstration, which sought to raise awareness of these urgent problems and call for quick action.
Protesters voiced their deep concerns about the increasing incidents of mob justice, particularly within university campuses. Citing the recent tragic deaths of two individuals at Jahangirnagar University and Dhaka University, they called for immediate action. "We strongly condemn these heinous acts," declared one of the demonstrators. "Neither educational institutions nor any part of society should tolerate mob justice or extrajudicial killings."
Ivan Tahsib, a student leader, stressed the importance of upholding the law. "Extrajudicial killings are completely unacceptable, no matter the circumstances. We demand that justice be administered through proper legal channels, with the university administration leading the way. Students should cooperate with authorities, not take matters into their own hands."
Echoing this sentiment, Yasin Piyas, another protester, warned of the dangerous consequences of allowing mob justice to persist unchecked. "If we let this culture of lawlessness continue, we risk repeating the violent history of the past, where political groups like the Chhatra League justified attacks on individuals by labeling them as Jamaat-Shibir. The recent mob killings are a grim warning. We demand an end to this violence and the restoration of legal governance," he stated.
The protest drew participants from across various departments, all united in their call for a return to lawful order and the cessation of mob justice. Their message was clear, "Justice must be served through proper channels, not through violence and chaos."
