BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the interim government should try to know from people first what changes they do want before their initiatives to amend the constitution.
"If they (interim government) wants to amend the constitution partially or create a new constitution, they must form a parliament first. If an elected parliament is not brought into existence, how do you expect to amend the constitution," he asked.
In this regard, Mirza Fakhrul said that the people's mandate is the safest basis for bringing any major changes to the constitution.
"There should be elections. With the necessary reforms for a free and fair election—such as in the Election Commission and the administration— once elections are held, you can make all necessary changes in parliament. The safest approach would be to secure the people's mandate if you want to make fundamental changes."
He made the remarks while exchanging views with journalists at the BNP Chairperson's office at Gulshan in the city on Saturday morning.
Mirza Fakhrul said: "Please talk to politicians first. Send proposals to them. Take opinions of those who are experienced on these issues."
The BNP Secretary General also mentioned that Sheikh Hasina should face her cases arriving in the country. "Cases of murder, human rights violations have been filed against Sheikh Hasina. She will have to face these cases at courts. If she is a true politician, she should face these cases arriving in Bangladesh," he added.
