GAIBANDHA, Sept 21:  Sanitation and waste management activities have been irregular in municipality areas of the district, creating health risks.

This deplorable condition in the sanitation and waste management has been due to poor monitoring and supervising by the authorities concerned.
After visiting many areas of the municipality, this correspondent found critical situation in the sanitation management.

Municipal residents connected their toilet pipes with drains on roadsides. As most of the drains are un-covered, the overall environment of the municipality is getting polluted.

The condition of public toilets located at important places of the municipality is much pitiable; toilets have become unusable; these have been fulfilled with human waste.

Piles of waste are available on the important roads of the municipality. Day by day, the size of the waste piles is getting bigger for not removing waste by the assigned staff of the municipality. Stench is coming out from the decomposed waste.

A middle level employee of the municipality, on condition of anonymity, said, the mayor of the municipality was removed through an order of the Interim Government after the fall of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.

Since then the staff of the municipality have become indifference and do not attend the office regularly. As their transparency and accountability are not showing to the proper authority, they are indifferent to perform their scheduled works.

Due to lack of monitoring and supervising, the condition of the sanitary management is getting pitiable and deplorable, he added.

For not removing waste from the roads, the environment of the municipality is deteriorating.

If such the condition continues, the municipality turn unliveable.

Taking the matter into cognizance, a local non-government SKS Foundation is arranging meeting and congregation in the municipality very often to draw the attention of the authorities under a project of Rising for Rights for Strengthening Civil Society Network to Achieve SDG 6. But the situation is not improving.

Administrator of the Municipality Md Ershad Uddin said, the pitiable situation has been created in the sanitation management and waste removal activity in the municipality just after the fall of the immediate past government and removing mayor by the Interim Government.

This type of situation should not go any more, and the situation will start improving very soon, he added.
