Mashiur Rahman, the additional deputy inspector general (DIG) of the police's Chattogram Range, has been placed on a seven-day remand in another murder case filed on charges of killing of Abdul Motalib during mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury passed the order on Thursday after the investigating officer of the case, Inspector Nazrul Islam of the Ramna Zonal Team, presented Mashiur before the court and pleaded for 10-day remand.
The defence lawyer filed a petition seeking the cancellation of the remand and requested bail.
After hearing of both sides, the court passed the order.
Earlier, on September 19, Mashiur Rahman was arrested from airport area in the capital and the next day the court granted a seven-day remand in a case filed on charges of killing a businessman named Abdul Wadud in the New Market area.
According to the case document, on August 4, Abdul Motalib took part in a procession during student movement. He was shot dead near Zigatola bus stand of in Dhanmondi.
Abdul Matin, father of the deceased, filed a case with the Dhanmondi police station on August 26, against 176 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former road transport and bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
Meanwhile, Mashiur was promoted from the position of deputy commissioner of the Lalbagh division to additional DIG. However, since his new posting had not been finalised, he continued to serve as the deputy commissioner (detective) of the Lalbagh division until August 5.
Following the changeover in the government, Mashiur was transferred from the Detective Branch to the DIG's office at the Chattogram Range.
