Kanpur Test to commence today amidst rain and security threats

The second and final encounter of the two-match Test series between visiting Bangladesh and hosts India is set to begin today at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. India leading the series 1-0, will look to complete a whitewash with a win in Kanpur, while Bangladesh aims to square the series.

The match will start at 10:00am (BST).

In addition to India's cricketing strength, Bangladesh will face a few more challenges in Kanpur including weather concerns, unfamiliar pitch conditions and security issues. According to AccuWeather, there is a chance of heavy rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with cloudy skies expected over the next two days. Furthermore, Bangladesh lack experience playing in Kanpur, where the pitch soil is black, a distinct feature that could affect their performance.

Moreover, the Hindu Mahasabha, an Indian religious-political organization, called for the cancellation of the Kanpur Test, citing attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh following recent political changes there.

The group threatened to disrupt the match. However, the Indian government and Uttar Pradesh administration have ensured that the game will proceed as scheduled, with three-tier security arrangements in place for the Bangladesh team.

In terms of team composition, the line-ups in the first Test in Chennai were quite similar, with both teams fielding two spinners and three pacers. For the Kanpur Test, both sides are expected to make at least one change and are likely bringing in an additional spinner in place of a pacer as the pitch in Kanpur is typically low and slow. Spinners are expected to play a key role from the third day onward.

For Bangladesh, young pacer Nahid Rana is likely to be rested and experienced left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who bags 195 Test wickets, is expected to replace Rana. India on the other hand, may drop pacer Akash Deep to make room for either Kuldeep Yadav or Axar Patel.

There are also questions regarding Bangladesh's opening pair. Mahmudul Hasan Joy might get a chance in place of either Shadman Islam or Zakir Hasan.

The middle order remains solid with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das.

The bowling unit will likely consist of spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul and Shakib, alongside seamers Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud.

Given the overcast conditions and the tendency for the pitch to offer turn from Day 3, the team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
