SATKHIRA, Sept 26: Youths in Shyamnagar Upazila of the district made a demonstration on the Chuna River dam on Thursday morning, demanding climate justice in coastal areas.

With placards more than 50 youths and locals of the coastal region participated in the demonstration on the Datinakhali WDB embankment at Burigoalini Union in the upazila.

There were different types of slogans on placards such as 'Right to survive, want climate justice', 'stop investing in fossil fuel', 'want to invest in the future', 'stop investing in harmful agricultural practices', 'we want justice', 'climate justice now', and 'increase investment in renewable energy'.

In cooperation with research and development organization Barcik (Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge), Banjeevi Youth arranged  the programme with a view to showing solidarity with global climate strike for climate justice in southwest Bangladesh
It was jointly organized by voluntary organization Banjeebi Youth Team and Upazila Youth Voluntary Coordination Committee. Md Shamim Hossain is the president of the team.

Under the supervision of Barcik Youth Organizer S M Osman Gani Sohag, Shefali Bibi of Upazila Sabuj Saghati, Prakash Mandal of SSST, youth volunteers Abdur Rahman, Al-Mamun, Md Tawhid Hossain, Zulekha Akhtar, Tanya Parveen, Sharifa Khatun, Nasreen Akter and others took part in the event.

Shamim Hossain, an executive member of Upazila Youth Voluntary Coordination Committee, said, "We want to see a Bangladesh with climate and energy security for the future."

He urged the government and investors to stop projects that harm the environment and invest in sustainable projects instead of investing in fossil fuel.

Barcik-Shyamnagar Resource Centre Regional Coordinator (Acting) Ramakrishna Joardar said, along with other countries in the world, Bangladesh is also experiencing global changes due to adverse effect of climate change.

"Unbridled carbon emission and fossil fuel consumption by the developed countries of the world are making low-income countries like ours the most vulnerable. Today's damming is part of the week-long Global Climate Strike to build a greener world. Each of us must seek climate justice from our own place.  Otherwise our future generations will face serious losses. Let us reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy to build a liveable green world for all life," he added.

Local social worker Md Bulbul Hriday said, fossil fuel is one of causes of global warming and an important influencer for rapid climate change; global warming is increasing day by day as a result of the rate at which fossil fuels are constantly used in factories, power generation, and transportation.

He further said, in addition, the wealthy countries of the Western world are increasing investment in fossil fuel. Because of their capitalist attitude, the world is facing destruction today.

Shefali Bibi, an active member of Sabuj Saghati, said, "Due to climate change, we, who go to the forest, face various problems. Honey is less this year than last year's. Even if it is not the monsoon season, it rains heavily, whenever there is a storm, the Forest Department does not allow us to go. We cannot go to catch fish and crabs. We have to go down into the salt water and pull the net in the river. Physical problems occur in women. If our government does not take effective action to tackle climate change now, the situation will only get worse in the future."
