Road mishaps claim 12 lives in 9 dists

A total of 12 people were killed and at least 21 others injured in separate road accidents in nine districts - Kushtia, Sirajganj, Tangail, Naogaon, Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Jhenidah, Magura and Chattogram, in three days. 
DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA: A police official of Daulatpur Police Station (PS) in the district and a student of Islamic University were killed and at least six others were injured in a road accident on Wednesday.
The accident took place in Alauddin Nagar Kalur Mor area on the Kushtia-Rajbari highway under Kumarkhali Upazila of the district in the afternoon. 
The deceased were identified as Shahidul Islam, 40, hailed from Sreepur area in Magura District and a sub-inspector (SI) of Daulatpur PS, and Monir Hossain, 22, a student of Kushtia Islamic University. 
It was known that SI Shahidul Islam was heading towards Khoksa in the district from Daulatpur. On the way, a goods-laden truck and a mahindra (local vehicle) were collided head-on in Alauddin Nagar Kalur Mor area on the Kushtia-Rajbari highway under Kumarkhali Upazila in the afternoon, which left at least eight people including the SI seriously injured.
Locals then rescued the injured and rushed them to Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
Later on, Shahidul and Monir succumbed to their injuries.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies. 
However, the law enforcers have seized the killer truck, but its driver managed to flee the scene.
Officer-in-Charge of Dolta PS Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with the PS and legal action would be taken in this regard.
SIRAJGANJ: A school teacher was killed in a road accident in Raiganj Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place in Dadpur area on the Dhaka-Bogura highway under the upazila in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Manzurul Islam, son of late Nurul Islam, a resident of Dadpur Mohotpara Village in the upazila. He was an assistant teacher of Bengnai Teghuri Government High School.  
Quoting locals, Hatikumrul Highway PS SI Matiur Rahman said that a bus coming from Nagarbari hit Manzurul in front of 'Mayer Anchal' Hotel in Dadpur area in the morning while he was crossing the Dhaka-Bogura highway, which left him dead on the spot. 
Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as no complaint was lodged from them in this regard, the SI added.
TANGAIL: A man was killed and at least 10 others were injured after a bus hit a pedestrian and entered a roadside house in Bhuapur Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.
The accident took place in Kuthiboira Bazar area on the Tangail-Tarakandi highway of the upazila at around 8 pm.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Halim, 55, hailed from Kuthiboira Village in the upazila.
Quoting locals, Bhuapur PS OC Rezaul Karim said that the accident occurred when a bus hit a pedestrian and entered a roadside house as its driver lost control over the steering at around 8 am in the area, which left the pedestrian dead on the spot and at least 10 passengers of the bus injured.
Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.
The injured were rescued and taken to a local hospital.
However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.
PORSHA, NAOGAON: A young man was killed as a bus hit his motorcycle in Porsha Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
The accident took place at around 8 pm in front of Brac office on the Saraigachhi-Nitpur road under the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 26, son of late Fulchan Jeweller, a resident of Kalmudanga Village in Sapahar Upazila of the district.
It was known that Alamgir was heading towards his father-in-law's house in Kalaibari from Saraigachhi intersection at night riding on a motorcycle. On the way, a Dhaka-bound passenger-laden bus hit his motorcycle in front of Brac office on the Saraigachhi-Nitpur road of Porsha at around 8 pm, leaving him dead on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the body.
Porsha PS OC Shahin Reza confirmed the incident.    
GOPALGANJ: A college student was killed and another injured after a passenger bus hit a battery-run easy-bike in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday evening.
The accident took place at Bijaypasha in Paikkandi Union on the Dhaka-Khulna highway of the upazila at around 7:30 pm.
Deceased Rezwan Sarder, 24, was the son of Masum Sarder of Bijaypasha Purbapara Village in the upazila. He was a honours third year student of Economics Department of Gopalganj Government Bangabandhu University College. 
The injured is Rezaul Molla, 26, driver of the easy-bike.
Bhatiapara Highway PS SI AKM Hasanuzzaman said that a bus hit an easy-bike in Bijaypasha Crossing area in the evening, which left two people injured.
Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Rezwan dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police, however, seized the bus but its driver and his helper managed to flee scene, the SI added.
MORRELGANJ, BAGERHAT: A farmer was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Morrelganj Upazila on of the district on Tuesday.
The accident occurred in Kathaltala area of the upazila at around 8 am.
The deceased was identified as Md Hormuz Gazi, 65, a resident of Purba Khontakata Village under Sarankhola Upazila in the district.
The injured are: Masum Gazi and Anwar Hossain.
According to locals, Hormuz was riding on a hired motorbike which driver lost control over the steering and hit a female pedestrian first and then crashed into a roadside tree in Kathaltala area of Morrelganj in the morning. Hormuz died on the spot and two others including motorcycle driver Anwar were critically injured at that time.
Being informed, police recovered the body. 
Morrelganj PS OC Mohammad Shamsuddin confirmed the incident, saying that no formal complaint has been lodged yet.
Legal action would be taken if any written complaint is received from the deceased's family, the OC added.
JHENIDAH: Two people were killed and another was injured in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The accident took place in Sadhuhati area on the Jhenidah-Chuadanga highway under the upazila at around 4:50 am.
The deceased were identified as Anisur Rahman, 65, a resident of Baro Kaunia Village in the upazila, and Farukh Matubbar, 45, hailed from Bhawal Village under Saltha Upazila in Faridpur District.
Quoting locals, Jhenidah Sadar PS OC Shaheen Uddin said that the accident occurred when a Meherpur-bound mini truck from Faridpur hit another truck coming from the opposite direction in Sadhuhati area on the Jhenidah-Chuadanga highway at dawn, which left two people dead on the spot and injured another.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene and handed those over to their respective families.
The injured person was also rescued and admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.
However, necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the OC added.
MAGURA: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a private car in Sadar Upazila of the district on Monday night.
The accident took place in Kashinathpur Signboard area under the upazila at around 9 pm.
The deceased were identified as Sunny Biswas, 21, and Muhib Biswas, 19. Both of them were residents of Goiricharonpur Village under the upazila.
Confirming the incident, Magura Sadar PS OC Joyanta Kumar Mondol said that the accident occurred when a private car and a motorbike collided head-on in Kashinathpur Signboard area at around 9 pm. Three people were critically injured at that time.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to different hospitals.  
Later on, Sunny was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at Magura General Hospital while Muhib succumbed to his injuries on the way to Faridpur Medical College.
However, police seized the private car and a case was filed in this regard, added the OC.
SITAKUNDA, CHATTOGRAM: A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed after being hit by a covered van on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sitakunda Upazila of the district on Monday morning.
The accident took place in Pantichila area of the upazila at around 9:30 am.
The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, 42, eldest son of late freedom fighter Ishaq Mia, a resident of Muhuri Village under Baroiardhala Union in the upazila. He was the general secretary of Baroiardhala Union Unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to locals, a speedy covered van crashed into Anwar's motorcycle from behind in Poursad area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the morning, which left him dead on the spot.
Confirming the matter, Kumira Highway PS OC Abdul Hakeem Azad said that the covered van managed to escape the scene immediately after the accident. 
However, efforts are going on to identify the covered van and legal actions would be taken in this regard, the OC added.
