Due to very heavy rainfall in Rangpur division over the next 24 hours, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts, and some low-lying areas of those districts may be flooded in the next 24 hours.
It was stated by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in a rainfall and river situation forecast on Friday (September 27, 2024).
Signed by Sarder Udoy Raihan, Executive Engineer of the FFWC, the forecast said all the major rivers of the country are flowing below the danger level.
However, in Rangpur division, the water level of Teesta and Dharla rivers is increasing, while the water level of Dudhkumar river is stable and flowing below the danger level.
According to meteorological agencies, there is a trend of very heavy rainfall (≥89 mm/24 hours) in Rangpur division and adjacent uplands/upstream for next 24 hours and rainfall tendency may decrease in next two days.
Consequently, the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may increase rapidly in 24 hours, it may remain stable for the next one day and may decrease for next one day.
The Teesta river in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may flow close to its warning level and the respective pasture areas and some low-lying areas of the districts may be flooded during the next 24 hours.
On the other hand, the water level in the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers of Kurigram district may flow below the danger level over the next three days.
Other major rivers of Rangpur division -- Upper Karatoa, Upper Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, Ichamati-Jamuna and Jamuneshwari rivers are in increasing trend. The water level of all these rivers of Rangpur division may rise over the next 24 hours, which may remain steady for the subsequent one day, but may flow below the danger level.
Water level of these rivers may decrease for next one day.
In Rangpur division, water level of Brahmaputra river and its downstream Jamuna river is increasing and flowing below the danger level. Water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river may remain stable over the next 5 days.
In Rajshahi division, water level of Ganga river is decreasing and the water level of river Padma downstream is in steady condition and flowing below the danger level. The water level of Ganga-Padma river may decrease slowly over next two days, may remain steady over the next one day and may increase for next two days but may flow below the danger level. Water level of these rivers may decrease in next three days.
Water level of Surma and Kushiara rivers in Sylhet division is increasing and flowing below the danger level. Water level of these rivers may decrease over the next three days. Other major rivers—Manu, Khoai, Dhalai rivers are in decreasing trend, while Someshwari, Bhugai rivers are in increasing trend and Sarigoin, Kongsha rivers are in steady condition. These rivers are flowing below the danger level. Water level of these rivers may decrease in next 3 days.
In Chattogram division, the water level of Muhuri, Feni, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Gomti river is decreasing, while the water level of Halda river is in stable condition. There is a low tendency of heavy rainfall (44-88 mm/24 hours) in Chittagong Division and adjacent upstream over the next 3 days, consequently water level of rivers in Chattogram division may decrease.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), there is no low pressure over concerned Bay of Bengal, thus, normal tidal condition may prevail in the coastal rivers of Barisal and Khulna divisions over the next 3 days.
