Bangladesh's Tour of India 2024

Shanto, Mominul hold nerves in short-live Day-1 of Kanpur Test

Bangladesh posted 107 runs for the loss of three wickets in their first innings on Day 1 of the final Test of the two-match series against India at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Friday. Rain and bad light forced an early end to the day's play after only 35 overs were bowled.

A wet outfield delayed the start of play by an hour, with the toss initially scheduled for 10:00am (BST), but the match eventually began at 11:00am.

India won the toss and surprisingly elected to bowl first, inviting Bangladesh to bat. This was the first time since 1964 that a team won the toss and chose to bowl first in Kanpur.

The last instance was when Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi won the toss and fielded against England, in a match that ended in a draw. Notably, in the first Test of this series, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

This marks the first time in Test cricket history that the toss-winning side has chosen to field in both matches of a series in India.

India kept their winning combination unchanged, while Bangladesh made two changes from the Chennai Test XI. Sayed Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam replaced pacers Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed.

Bangladesh started cautiously, but opener Zakir Hasan was dismissed for a duck after facing 24 balls-the highest number of deliveries faced by a Bangladeshi opener before being dismissed for a duck.

This was also the first time Zakir had been dismissed for zero in a Test innings. His opening partner Shadman Islam scored 24 runs as Bangladesh lost both openers with just 29 runs on the board.

Captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mominul Haque then stabilized the innings and remained unbeaten until the lunch break. However, a second rain delay postponed the start of the second session by 15 minutes.

Soon after play resumed post-Tea, Shanto was dismissed for 31 ending a 51-run partnership with Mominul. Bangladesh lost their third wicket with the score at 80. After just nine overs into the second session, bad light halted play once again.

Due to heavy rain and worsening light conditions, play could not be resumed and the umpires called off the day's proceedings after 35 overs.

At stumps, Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 40, while Mushfiqur Rahim was not out on six.

Akash Deep claimed two wickets for India, while Ravichandran Ashwin took one.
