Four people murdered, 51 injured in five districts

Four people including a woman have been killed and at least 51 others injured in separate incidents in five districts - Bogura, Rajshahi, Narayanganj, Habiganj and Sunamganj, in recent times.

BOGURA: An auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed to death by a youth in Shajahanpur Upazila of the district on Friday.

The incident took place in Kalmachapar Village under Kharna Union of the upazila at around 11 am.

The deceased was identified as Afsar Ali, 50, son of Safar Uddin, a resident of Kalmachapar Village in the upazila. 

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shajahanpur Police Station (PS) Abdul Wadud said that Afsar Ali was heading towards Kharna Bazar from the house in the morning. On the way, one Rezaul, 35, son of Abu Khayer of the area, halted him, and stabbed him in the stomach, which left Afsar Ali critically injured. 

Local people then rescued Afsar Ali and immediately took him to Shajahanpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. 

Being informed, police have recovered the body and sent it to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, agitated locals caught the accused Rezaul after hearing the death news of Afsar Ali, and beat up him, leaving the youth injured.

Later on, the law enforcers rescued Rezaul and admitted him to a hospital. 

Necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

RAJSHAHI: A local leader of Swechasebak Dal was hacked to death and his brother was injured reportedly by an Awami League (AL) activist in Mohanpur Upazila of the district on Thursday evening.

The incident took place in Bara Palsha Village under Dhurail Union of the upazila at around 6 pm.

The deceased was identified as Saddam Hossain, 30, son of Ayen Uddin, a resident of the aforesaid area. He was the former general secretary of the Ward No. 9 Unit of the Swechasebak Dal in the union. 

His elder brother Md Bulbul, 45, also sustained serious injuries at that time.

Quoting local people, Mohanpur PS OC Abdul Hannan said that Bulbul, a leader of the Krishak Dal, had a dispute with AL activist Eksar Ali over political issues.

They locked into an altercation in front of the house of Eksar Ali in Bara Palsha Village under Dhurail Union of the upazila at around 6 pm. At one stage of the altercation, Eksar Ali brought a sharp weapon from his house and attacked on Bulbul. As Saddam tried to protect his brother, he was also attacked by the AL activist and received critical injuries.

Locals then rescued the injured brothers, but Saddam succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex. 

Being informed, police recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The law enforcers have also arrested the accused Eksar Ali in connection with the killing of the Swechasebak Dal leader.

However, filing of a murder case with Mohanpur PS is underway and legal action would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

NARAYANGANJ: A housewife was allegedly strangled by her husband at Siddhirganj in the city on Wednesday.


The incident took place in Mijmiji Chowdhury Para area of Siddhirganj in the city in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Nupur Akhter, 26, wife of Md Rabiul Islam Babu. She was the daughter of Shahjahan Chawkider of Barishal District. 

It was known that Nupur Akhter along with her husband lived in a rented house in Mijmiji area of Siddhirganj. 

Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Siddhirganj PS Md Wasim said that Rabiul Islam Babu had an altercation with his wife Nupur Akhter in their rented house on Wednesday. At one stage of the altercation, Rabiul strangulated Nupur with a scarf, leaving her dead on the spot.

Sensing the matter, local people caught Rabiul and informed the matter to police through calling on the national emergency number 999.

Being informed, police rushed to the scene and have recovered the body. 

The body was, later, sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, the law enforcers have detained the deceased's husband Rabiul Islam Babu for interrogation, the SI added.

Siddhirganj PS OC Al Mamun confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

HABIGANJ: A man was killed in a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Bahubal Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The clash broke out in Babnakandi Village of the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Wahid Mia, 32, son of Ishaque Molla, a resident of the same village.

Quoting locals, police said that there a dispute between the supporters of Arzu Mia and Moshahid Mia over a piece of a land for long. 

Following this, a clash took place between them in the morning while the both groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, which left Wahid seriously injured.

He was then rescued and taken to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Being informed, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Bahubal PS OC Md Moshiur Rahman confirmed the incident.

SUNAMGANJ: More than 50 people were injured in a clash over a football match in Shantiganj Upazila of the district on Monday.
According to locals, a tension arose between the supporters of current East Birgaon Union Parishad Chairman Riazul Islam Raizul and former chairman Noor Kalam at Birgaon Bazar area on Sunday afternoon over a football match. At one stage, it takes the form of conflict, although the issue was resolved with the intervention of locals. 

Following the dispute, the both groups locked into a clash on Monday morning with local weapons. During these clashes, more than 50 individuals from both sides were injured.

The injured people are receiving treatment at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said local sources.

Shantiganj PS OC Md Jahidul Haque confirmed the matter, saying that the situation is now under control.
