PABNA, Sept 28: Teacher crisis is halting academic activities in government primary schools in Ishwardi Upazila of the district.

Some schools are running with one or two teachers. Teachers are struggling to teach.

According to sources at Upazila Primary Education Office, there are 100 government primary schools at Ishwardi having 23,707 students.

There are 849 teachers out of a total 899 posts. Among them, 100 are head teachers and 799 are assistant teachers.

A total of 38 posts of head teachers and 12 posts of assistant teachers are vacant.

Due to the vacant posts of head teachers, school administrative work, managerial work and other works are hampered.

On condition of anonymity, six to seven teachers said, many schools are running classes on rotation basis due to  lack of required teachers.
There are six teachers for 161 students in Rooppur Girls Government Primary School in Pakshi Upazila.

Acting Head Teacher of the school Rezaul Karim said, due to the shortage of teachers, regular teaching is halted; although there is a rule that one teacher should teach 40 students, but, on an average, one teacher has to teach 113 students.

Rezwan Qureshi, acting head teacher  of Aruttala Government Primary School, said,  he has to do everything from the administrative work of the school to teaching students.

Even after informing the Upazila Primary Education office to fill up the vacancy, the problem was not resolved.

Bangladesh Primary Teachers Association-Ishwardi Upazila Branch General Secretary Helal Uddin said, since the promotion from assistant teacher to head teacher has been stopped for several years and new head teachers have not been appointed, the teacher crisis is gradually increasing.

On behalf of the association, a demand has been made to the district and upazila primary education officer for appointing teachers and fill up vacancies.

Upazila Primary Education Officer Shahina Akhter said, a list of vacancies of head teachers and assistant teachers has been sent to the District Primary Education Office. Vacant posts will be filled up when necessary teachers are available.
