The education ministry has dissolved the 10-strong coordination committee formed to revise and amend textbooks, just two weeks after its constitution.

The committee was disbanded on Saturday by an order of the Secondary and Higher Education Division amid criticism and discussions about some of its members.

The order said, "The coordination committee formed by the education ministry on Sept 15 to ensure the revision and amendment of all textbooks printed and prepared by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board has been dissolved."

The committee was headed by KM Kabirul Islam, additional secretary of the education ministry, and included education researcher Rakhal Raha, Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun from the physics department at Dhaka University, Professor Mohammad Azam from the Bengali department, and Associate Professor Samina Lutfa Nitra from the sociology department, additional secretary Masud Akhtar Khan from the primary and mass education ministry, NCTB Chairman AKM Riazul Hasan, NCTB Curriculum Committee Member Rabiul Kabir Chowdhury, and NCTB Primary Curriculum Member AFM Sarwar Jahan.

Secondary and Higher Education Division Senior Assistant Secretary Md Yanur Rahman served as the committee's member secretary.

Concerns were raised about members Raha, Nitra, and Mamun from various organisations and social media, leading to the committee's dissolution.

However, the order did not specify the reasons for the committee's dissolution, nor did it mention the formation of a new committee.

Since the change in government following the student-led movement, the interim government has announced plans for the revision and refinement of the previous textbooks as part of its reform agenda.

The committee was tasked with ensuring the successful revision and coordination of all free textbooks published by the NCTB.    —bdnews24.com
