To us, it was a bolt from the blue. It made us speechless when we heard on 24 September, Lt. Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon, a lieutenant of the Bangladesh Army, was killed during an operation by joint forces in the Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar. He was posted at Ramu Cantonment in Cox's Bazar.

The operation was being conducted against criminals, including those who held illegal arms. A group of seven or eight robbers, sensing the presence of the army patrol, tried to escape when Lt Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon pursued them. The robbers attacked Lt. Tanzim at this time and stabbed him in the neck, severely injuring him and leading to serious blood loss, causing his unfortunate death.  Though he was immediately rescued and taken to the hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead.

He received his commission in the Army Service Corps (ASC) from Bangladesh Military Academy on June 8, 2022, after the completion of the 82nd Long Course. This young and brave an Army officer has taught us all that an officer can be dedicated to his duties. He has also taught us our country is more important to us than our lives.

His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ishtiak Jamil, said after hearing the death news, "He (Lt. Tanzim) was born tough, a fabulous, passionate sportsman, and above all, a pure infantry heart. He wanted to be a commando and always walked an extra mile even when not seen.  He was a soldier and loved his soldiers from the heart. He was passionate, kindhearted, and used to love pets. He had a cat which he brought to the unit even during regimentation and kept it hiding! I knew how much he loved his uniform and his country. Who knew? Perhaps he wanted to die. Putting on uniform and for his country but not in the hands of his own countrymen, I'm sure! May Allah SWT grant you the best of Jannat."

Like his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ishtiak, it is all of our prayer that may Allah grant him eternal peace in Jannat. Through his death, he has shown us how passionate and respectful a young officer can be to both of his uniform and duty. His death has also reminded us of squadron leader Asim Jawad, who lost his life in the crash.

On May 9, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at Patenga in Chittagong when a training aircraft crashed due to mechanical failure. Squadron Leader Asim  Jawwad joined the Bangladesh Air Force Academy (BAFA) in 2010 after completing his HSC. He was commissioned as a pilot officer in December 2011 and served as a staff instructor at the Flying Instructors School (FIS) of BAF.  He was honored with theSword of Honor; for his exceptional achievements in his professional career.  He also served in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in DR Congo.

Though he ejected on that day and he was taken to BNS Patenga in critical condition, he died there despite the best efforts of doctors. Perhaps he could live if he ejected a few moments earlier. But he did not think about his own life. He thought about the people and wealth of our country even before breathing his last. He tried to take the aircraft from the densely populated area near the airport to the sparsely populated area with great courage and skill to avoid major damage after it caught fire.  His co-pilot, Wing Commander Sohan Hasan Khan, managed to eject from the jet safely and landed in the river. Later, he also told about the heroism of squadron leader Asim Jawad.

Squadron leader Asim Jawad had everything that a happy man has. He had a caring wife, two lovely children and loving parents. He did not think about them either. His country was his first priority.

In a nutshell, both Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon and Squadron leader Asim Jawad have taught us the new definition of patriotism. We have recently known many news stories of different corruptions of many leaders and high-ranking officers. Many of them have their 'Second Home' in multiple countries and perhaps a number of them do not exactly know how much money they have earned by money laundering.  If they could love our country like these two heroes, our country would be one of the developed countries of the world.
