Poor prices of sugarcane frustrate growers at Lalmohan Upazila

LALMOHAN, BHOLA, Sept 30: Despite bumper yielding of sugarcane in Lalmohan Upazila of the district, growers are not smiling because of poor price of their produce.

Water stagnation due to recent excessive raining, the root rotting disease appeared in sugarcane fields. Because of this, the sweetness of the sugarcane decreases.

So, due to lack of full sweetness, growers are not getting fair price of their produce in the market. Sugarcanes are selling at half price.

According to sources at the agriculture office in the upazila, this year, sugarcane was cultivated on 45 hectares of land including mostly of 208 species.

Already at least 60 per cent sugarcanes have been cut. The sugarcane harvesting will be completed within next one and a half months.

Grower Md Nazim of Uttar Fulbagicha at Ward No. 4 at Lalmohan Union said, "I have been cultivating sugarcane for the last several years.

Yielding was also good in the past years. I have cultivated sugarcane on about 22 decimal lands."

"The yielding has been good this year too. But due to decrease in sweetness, we are getting a bit less price," he added.

"This year my farming cost stands at about Tk 30,000. I hope to get a sale of  Tk 55,000. If root-rotting disease would not affect my field, I could sell sugarcane of Tk 80,000-90,000."

Grower Abdul Malek said, "Along with other crops, I cultivate sugarcane yearly. This year I cultivated sugarcane on 40 decimals of land.

The yielding had been good, but the rain rotted sugarcane roots. That is why the price is a bit less. My farming cost stands at Tk 55,000. So far I sold sugarcane of Tk 1.20 lakh. This sale amount would be Tk 1.60 lakh if there would be no disease."

Lalmohan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abu Hasnine confirmed the rotting damage of sugarcane.

"Though the price is a bit less, growers will not have to incur losses. Yet we will try to provide them with incentives," the official added.
