LALMOHAN, BHOLA, Oct 1: Ginger farming in bagging system on fallow land in Lalmohan Upazila of the district has created inspiration to farmers.

Fallow lands have now been green with bags of ginger. Only after four months, growers can start lifting their ginger.

At present, growers are passing busy time in rearing their ginger bags.

According to sources at the upazila agriculture office, a total of eight farmers of Pachwim Charumed Union in the upazila have cultivated gingers in about 1,200 bags on their own fallow lands.

Their farming cost stands at Tk 50 per bag. Growers expect one kilogram (kg) of ginger from each bag.

At present, per kg ginger is selling at Tk 200-250 in the market. The farmed ginger included BARI-2 and hilly species.

Grower Md Shah Alam of Pangashia area at Ward No. 4 of the union has cultivated ginger in 245 bags on fallow lands adjacent to his home.

In the last April, he took  advice from the agriculture office-Kurigram and started his ginger cultivation with BARI-2.

He said, "I have firstly cultivated ginger on fallow land. I can lift ginger within next four months. Till lifting my cultivation cost will stand at Tk 12,000-13,000. I hope to get a sale of Tk 60,000 from 245 bags."

Ginger farming in the bagging system is very easy; it requires minimum labour, he added.

He further said, "We can rear our fields ourselves. The cultivation cost is very less. I will increase my ginger farming in the next year."

Grower Abul Kalam of Maheshkhali Sikdarhat area at Ward No. 7 in the union said, "In the last year, I cultivated ginger in limited scale. The yielding was good. This year I have farmed ginger in 150 bags. It appears the yielding will be good. I hope to get ginger of at least Tk 30,000. In the next year, I have a plan to farm ginger in 1,000 bags." Seeing success in bag-based ginger farming, other farmers are showing interest.

One of them Mizanur Rahman of Gazaria area said, "After seeing ginger farming in bags, I decided to farm ginger in next year. I will farm in at least 5,000 bags."

Sub-Assistant Agriculture officer in the upazila Tutul Chandra Saha said, "Farmers can cultivate ginger on their fallow lands; the farming cost is less; after farming in the bagging system, ginger can be lifted within eight months; this year on an experiment basis, ginger has been farmed in 1,200 bags  in the upazila. We hope in the next year ginger farming will be in at least 20,000 bags. Many are showing interest."

The upazila agriculture office is looking after the ginger farms regularly, and growers are given necessary advice, he added.

"We will stay beside them in the next year too, so that growers can be befitted," the official maintained.
