International Day of Older Persons observed

The 34th 'International Day of Older Persons' was observed in districts of the country including Khulna, Meherpur and Naogaon, on Tuesday.  

The theme of the Day was 'Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide'. 

KHULNA: In association with Khulna District administration, the Department of Social Service (DoSS) organised different programmes including bringing out a colourful rally and holding a discussion to mark the Day.

The discussion meeting was held in the conference room of Social Service Department.

While speaking at the discussion meeting, speakers said, 'Older citizens are the assets of our country as well as our society. We should show respect to them'.

'Everybody should be aware of taking care of himself so that nobody will have to spend hardship life during old age', they added. 

Terming the older persons as respected personnel in the society, they said, the Interim Government is working to ensure safe and honourable life for senior citizens in the country.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Director (DD) of the DoSS Kaniz Mostofa.  Director of the DoSS Anindita Roy addressed the meeting as the chief guest.

Assistant Director of DoSS Md Aynal Haque, senior citizens Kazi Motiar Rahman and Kazi Nurul Islam, among others, also spoke. 
Earlier, Khulna Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Saiful Islam handed over wheel chairs to five physically challenged older persons, bi-cycles among two and sticks among 10 older persons.

Besides, the DC attended a day-long free medical camp and inspected various activities of the Social Service office. 
MEHERPUR: A colourful rally, led by DC Sifat Mehnaj, paraded different streets in the district town in the morning to mark the Day.
A discussion was held at the district Shilpakala Academy, with DD of the DoSS Md Ashadul Islam in the chair. 

It was attended, among others, by DC Sifat Mehnaj, Civil Surgeon Dr Mohi Uddin Ahmed, Additional DC Tanveer Hasan Ruman, President of Meherpur Probin Hitoishi Sangha Abul Kalam and its Secretary Nurul Islam.

NAOGAON: A rally was brought out from the Circuit House of the District which paraded the important streets and ended in front of the office of the DC office.

A discussion was held in the conference room of the DC office conference room, attended by DC Md Abdul Awal as the chief guest.

DD of the DoSS Sur Mohammad presided over the function.

Additional Superintendent of Police Fauzia Habib Khan, President of the District   unit of Bangladesh Probin Hitoishi Sangha  Abbas Ali Sardar, General Secretary Nazrul Islam, former Principal Professor Shariful Islam Khan, among others, spoke.

Various levels of members of the District unit of Probin Hitoishi Sangha were also present.
