Khagrachhari, Oct 1:  A schoolteacher was beaten to death in Khagrachhari by a mob on Tuesday morning for allegedly raping an ethnic minority student.

After his death, a chase and counter-chase ensued between Bangalis and ethnic minority   people, said Sujan Chandra Roy, upazila nirbahi officer of Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Abul Hasnat Mohammad Sohel Rana,, an instructor in the Department of Civil Construction and Safety at the school.

Rozlin Shahid Chowdhury, additional district magistrate of Khagrachhari, confirmed news of the death of Sohel Rana, a teacher of Khagrachhari Government Technical School and College.

The Khagrachhari district administration has imposed Section 144 amid tension between Bengalis and hill people after the schoolteacher was beaten to death.

A teacher from Khagrachhari Government Technical School and College was beaten to death, Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Shahiduzzaman told the media.

"To prevent any untoward incident, Section 144 has been imposed in the Sadar area. Law enforcers have been deployed. The situation in the town is tense."

A group of students beat Sohel to death in a room at the school in the afternoon after accusing him of raping, according to witnesses and locals. The incident led to tension between the Bengalis and hill people of the district town.

After the incident, there were clashes between the two sides at the Chengi Square and Mahajanpara areas. The police, army, and other law enforcers arrived at the scene and eventually brought the situation under control. The district administration imposed Section 144 indefinitely from 3pm to control the situation.

Several attempts were made to contact the local police station and the school authorities about  the incident, but they did not make any comment.
