Chevron, Green Savers begin tree plantation in Habiganj

Chevron Bangladesh, in collaboration with the environmental organization Green Savers, has launched a tree plantation programme near its Bibiyana Gas Plant in Habiganj recently as part of a nationwide initiative to protect biodiversity, says a press release. 

The five-year project aims to plant over 4,000 high-quality seedlings, including indigenous flowers, fruit trees, wood trees, and medicinal plants. 
The initiative prioritizes native species to promote biodiversity, improve air quality, and provide habitat for local wildlife. 

A significant aspect of the project is the planting of Debdaru trees, known for their sound-absorbing qualities, which will help reduce noise pollution and create a more peaceful environment around the gas plant.

Speaking at the inauguration, Fardoush Anwar, director of the Sylhet divisional office of the Department of Environment, praised the initiative, describing it as a noteworthy example of corporate responsibility towards environmental protection.

Chevron Bangladesh's president and managing director, Eric M. Walker, highlighted the environmental benefits of the initiative, stating: " Our tree plantation campaign reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. We aim to nurture these trees for lasting benefits to the environment and community."

Ahsan Rony, founder of Green Savers, emphasized the importance of corporate involvement in environmental initiatives, stating: "If top corporate houses like Chevron take such planned and sustainable initiatives to build a green Bangladesh and protect the environment, the country will be greener."

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Md. Nur E Alam Siddiquee, Deputy Director of Habiganj District Agricultural Extension Department; Anupam Das Anup, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Nabiganj Upazila; Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Nabiganj Upazila; Mohammad Kamal Hossain PPM, Officer in Charge of Nabiganj Police Station; Muhammad Imrul Kabir, Corporate Affairs Director at Chevron Bangladesh, and other local officials and environmentalists.
