Road mishaps claim 11 lives in seven districts

A total of 11 people have been killed and at least 11 others injured in separate road accidents in seven districts - Madaripur, Moulvibazar, Narsingdi, Dinajpur, Brahmanbaria, Gopalganj and Khulna, in three days.
 
MADARIPUR: An elderly man was killed after being hit by an ambulance in Thantali Police Station (PS) area in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday. 
The deceased was identified as Rajab Ali Sarder, 60, son of late Sonamdi Sarder, a resident of Thantali area under Madaripur Municipality.

Quoting locals, Inspector (Investigation) of Madaripur Sadar Model PS Monirul Islam said that the accident occurred when Rajab Ali went to the mosque next to his house to perform Fajr prayers on Tuesday. 

After the prayer in early morning, he was returning home. At that time, an ambulance hit him while he was crossing the road, which left him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took him to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Rajab Ali Sarder dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, legal action will be taken in this connection, the police official added.

KAMALGANJ, MOULVIBAZAR: A tourist was killed and at least six others were injured as an auto-rickshaw overturned on the Kamalganj-Sreemangal road in Kamalganj Upazila of the district on Monday afternoon.

The accident took place in Magurchhara area adjacent to the Lawachhara National Park of the upazila at around 3 pm.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayeed Shahin, 48, son of late Abdul Gafur of Maijdee area under Sudharam PS in Noakhali District.

Police and local sources said that a group of tourists including Abu Sayeed Shahin came to Lawachhara in Kamalganj Upazila of the district from Dhaka on Monday for a visit. The tourists then rented an auto-rickshaw to visit Madhabpur Lake in Kamalganj.

On the way, the auto-rickshaw overturned after losing its control over the steering in Magurchhara area on the Kamalganj-Sreemangal road adjacent to the Lawachhara National Park of the upazila at around 3 pm, which left the auto-rickshaw driver and its five passengers including Abu Sayeed Shahin seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured persons and took them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Abu Sayeed Shahin dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

The injured five are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kamalganj PS Syed Iftekhar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard. 

RAIPURA, NARSINGDI: Two motorcyclists were killed in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a motorcycle in Raipura Upazila of the district on Monday. 

The accident took place in Marjal Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Marjal Union of the upazila in the afternoon. 

The deceased were identified as Darul Karar Sifat, 26, son of Akhtaruzzaman, a resident of the aforesaid area, and Ikral Hossain Sohel, 28, son of Iqbal Fakir, a resident of Sinishpur area under Sadar Upazila in the district. 

Police and local sources said that a Bhairab-bound motorcycle carrying Darul Karar Sifat and Ikral Hossain Sohel collided with a pickup van coming from the opposite direction in Marjal Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Marjal Union of the upazila in the afternoon, which left both of the motorcyclists injured critically. 

Local people then rescued the injured persons and took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead. 

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies.

However, the law enforcers have seized the pickup van and arrested its driver.

In-Charge of Itakhol Police Outpost Sohel Sarwar confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

DINAJPUR: Four people were killed and at least three others injured in separate road accidents in the district in two days.

Two people were killed and at least three others injured when a covered van ran over some three-wheelers after losing its control over the steering in Ghoraghat Upazila on Monday morning.

The accident took place on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in front of Raniganj Fish Market of the upazila at around 7 am.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Gaffar, 68, hailed from Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur District, and Anwar Hossain, 50, from Kochgram area under Birampur Upazila in Dinajpur District.

Quoting locals, police said that a covered van was going to Dhaka from Dinajpur in the morning. On the way, the covered van lost control over its steering on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in front of Raniganj Fish Market of Ghoraghat at around 7 am, and hit five to seven battery-powered auto-vans parked on the side of the road. 

Abdul Ghaffar died on the spot and at least four people including Anwar Hossain were seriously injured at that time. 

Later on, local people rescued the injured, but Anwar succumbed to his injuries on the way to Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

However, the law enforcers have seized the covered van and arrested its drivers from the scene.

Ghoraghat PS OC Nazmul Haque confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

Meanwhile, two more people were killed in separate road accidents in Birampur and Parbatipur upazilas of the district on Sunday.

A vegetable vendor was killed after being hit by a truck in Parbatipur Upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohir Uddin, 70, a resident of the upazila.

It was known that a truck hit Mohir Uddin in Bhober Bazar area of the upazila in the morning, leaving the vendor dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body.  

Locals, however, seized the truck and handed it over to the police.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Parbatipur Model PS Sohel Rana confirmed the incident.

Earlier, a bicyclist was killed in another road accident in Birampur Upazila early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Nur Alam, 45, son of late Monsur Ali, a resident of Bijul Village in the upazila. He was a grocery shop owner by profession.

It was known that Nur Alam was returning home after closing his shop at around 12:30 am riding on a bicycle. On the way, a truck hit his bicycle, leaving him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body. 

Birampur PS SI Kamruzzaman confirmed the incident.

BIJOYNAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: A man was killed in a collision between a private car and lorry truck in Bijoynagar Upazila of the district on Monday.

The accident took place in Budhanti area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway of the upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as the private car driver Shakib Mia, son of Gani Mia, hailed from Mohakhali Wireless Gate area in Dhaka.

Confirming the incident, Khantiata Highway PS OC Margub Tawhid said that the accident took place when a speedy lorry truck and a private car collided head-on in Budhanti area on the highway in the morning, which left the private driver seriously injured. 

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body, the OC added.

GOPALGANJ: An auto-van driver was killed and two others were injured in a three-way collision in Kashiani Upazila of the district on Monday.

The accident took place in front of Nurjahan Food and Agro Industries Limited at Bhattaidhoba Bus Stand on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at around 6 am.

The deceased was identified as Titul Molla, 45, son of Rokman Molla of Bhattaidhoba Village under Sajail Union in the upazila.

Local sources said that a speedy truck collided with a battery-powered auto-rickshaw and subsequently fell on Titul's auto-van in the area in the morning, which left him dead on the spot. 

Two auto-rickshaw passengers were also injured at that time.

Locals rescued the injured and took to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians referred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Kashiani PS OC Md Shafiuddin confirmed the incident, adding that police seized the truck involved in the accident and legal actions were being taken in this regard.

DUMURIA, KHULNA: A female police constable was killed after being hit by a truck in Dumuria Upazila of the district on Sunday night.

The accident occurred at around 8:30 pm in front of Gutudia Union Parishad (UP) of the upazila.

Deceased Farzana Yasmin worked at Dumuria PS as a constable.

Quoting locals, Dumuria PS OC Abdul Hai said that constable Farzana and her child were going to Satkhira from Khulna riding on her brother's motorcycle at night. 

On the way, Farzana Yasmin fell on the road from the motorcycle in front of Gutudia UP. 

At the same time, a truck coming from the opposite direction crushed her. She died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.
