Leaders of the visiting Europe-Bangladesh Federation of Commerce and Industry (EBFCI) said they want to invest in Bangladesh's jute, textiles and ship building industries saying that it is the peak time to grab the opportunity.

The EBFCI team comprising most Bangladeshi expatriates vowed to take Bangladesh forward economically by investing in jute, textiles and ship building and other sectors including health, education and infrastructures.

The business leaders said this at a meeting with Advisor for Shipping, Textiles and Jute Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain at his Bangladesh Secretariat office on Wednesday, said a press release.

The EBFCI leaders welcomed the interim government of Dr Muhammad Yunus, saying that the Chief Adviser to this government is not only a Nobel laureate but also an internationally recognized great person.

Led by Dr Wali Tasar Uddin, president of EBFCI , the meeting was also participated by Textiles and Jute Secretary Md Abdur Rauf and Shipping Secretary Dr AKM Matiur Rahman were present in the meeting.

They said new trade and investment opportunities have opened through the formation of the new government adding this is the right time to invest in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Dr Sakhawat said, "Through the student-people revolution, we got a new Bangladesh which is full of dreams and immense potentials". This country will be free from corruption and harassment, he said, adding, all foreign and domestic investments will be safe and risk-free from now on.

Noting that the present government is investment friendly, the adviser said the government welcomes foreign investments in any sector. "The government is working to create a favourable environment for investment through reform of all state organizations, structural and legal reforms. It create an environment for easy investment," he added.

Dr Sakhawat assured EBFCI leaders of providing all-out support from his ministry if they invest in jute, textiles and ship industries and urged all domestic and foreign businessmen including the EBFCI, to invest in jute, textiles and ship industries.

The adviser said that the misrule of Awame League during the last 15 years has destroyed all sectors of the economy including the jute and textiles industry. Jute and textile mills were closed for personal interests while the whole country was plagued with bribery, irregularities and corruption, he said.

Dr Sakhawat said the present government has already taken an initiative to establish a 'Research Centre on Jute and Textiles', saying that expatriates can provide technical and financial support in this regard.

He said the government has taken different steps to bring back the lost glory of jute and banning of the use of polythene at super shops from October 1 will pave the way for jute sector as the use of jute bags increase.
