GIZ Bangladesh raises awareness about eco-friendly cooling technologies

In celebration of World Ozone Day 2024, GIZ Bangladesh recently hosted a seminar to raise awareness about eco-friendly cooling technologies, specifically highlighting R290 air conditioners (ACs).

The event was organized in collaboration with the Ozone Cell of the Department of Environment (DOE), highlighting the critical role of green cooling solutions in mitigating both ozone depletion and climate change.

In the global south, refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector is contributing over 10.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. With a large population, rising temperatures and rapid urbanization, Bangladesh is experiencing a rapid increase in air-conditioning demand-what was once considered a luxury, is now perceived as a necessity. The Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) III project, implemented by GIZ supports Bangladesh in adopting natural refrigerants and energy- efficient cooling systems through policy guidance, technology transfer and capacity-building initiatives.

The seminar gathered key stakeholders, including policymakers, local manufacturers, technical experts, and sales professionals, to explore sustainable alternatives to the traditional synthetic refrigerants.

During the seminar, GIZ's Head of Energy Portfolio, Stoyanka Stich welcomed the guests by illustrating German Government's technical cooperation portfolio in Bangladesh while Shanin Muntaha of the Green Cooling project, outlined their role in supporting Bangladesh's transition to eco-friendly cooling technologies.

The keynote speaker, Mahiuddin Manik, from the Department of Environment, delivered the keynote emphasizing the government's interventions in the ongoing transformation of Bangladesh's RAC sector from using ozone- depleting substances (ODS) to environmentally friendly alternatives, like R290 refrigerants.

A panel discussion on promoting eco-friendly ACS and safe practices in the RAC sector included experts such as Dr Ali Ahammad Shoukat Chowdhury from BUET, Md. Noor A Alam, President of ASHRAE Bangladesh chapter, Mr Md Asaduzzaman, President of the AC-Fridge merchant associations (BRAMA) and a senior official of Walton. The panel addressed key issues, including the role of technicians and the market barriers in promoting green cooling technologies.

The project's demonstration initiatives, such as the introduction of R290 split ACs in public buildings, serve as vital steps towards achieving the country's climate targets.Bangladesh's commitment to transitioning towards natural refrigerants aligns with its goals under the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The increasing adoption of eco-friendly cooling technologies, supported by capacity building and technology transfer.

As the chief guest of the programme Ziaul Haque, Director and Head of the Ozone Cell at the Department of Environment said at the event, we have an international obligation to phase out R22 and CFC gas consumption by 67.5% by January 2025. By 2030 it will be completely phased out, he advised everyone in the sector to switch to alternative uses. He thanked the organizers for organizing this event on this important issue.
