Six killed, 23 injured in road mishaps

Six people including a woman were killed and at least 23 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts - Mymensingh, Madaripur, Chattogram, Sirajganj and Khulna, on Wednesday.

NANDAIL, MYMENSINGH: Two people were killed and seven others injured in a road accident in Nandail upazila in Mymensingh district on Wednesday noon.

The accident took place in front of Shamim Bhuiya Fishery in Dangri area on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway under the upazila at around 1:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Badal Mia, 35, son of late Amjad Ali, a resident of Sutaratia Village under Chandipasha Union, and Firoz Mia, 57, son of late Nabi Newaj, a resident of Dasalia Village in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that the accident occurred when a Bhairab-bound bus of 'Shyamal Chhaya Paribahan' collided head-on with a Nandail-bound battery-run auto-rickshaw in front of Shamim Bhuiya Fishery in Dangri area on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway under the upazila at around 1:30 pm, which left Badal Mia dead on the spot and eight others including driver of the auto-rickshaw Firoz Mia critically injured. 

Locals then rescued the injured, but Firoz Mia succumbed to his injuries on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies and handed those over to the families of the deceased without autopsies as per their request.

However, the law enforcers have seized the killer bus.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nandail Highway Police Station (PS) Md Khorshed Alam confirmed the incident, adding that legal actions would be taken in this regard.

SHIBCHAR, MADARIPUR: A man was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a collision between two buses on the Dhaka-Bhanga expressway in Shibchar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident took place on the Bhanga-bound lane of the expressway near Surjanagar Passenger Shed in the upazila at around 11:30 am.

The deceased was identified as Md Imdad, 40, a resident of Sonatala area under Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat District. He was a covered van driver by profession. 

Quoting locals, Shibchar Highway PS OC Md Shakil Ahmed said that two covered vans were parked on the roadside near Surjanagar Passenger Shed on the expressway. The drivers were standing nearby when a bus of 'Hamim Paribahan' collided with a bus of 'Narail Express' at around 11:30 am.

Being hit the Narail Express bus crushed a covered van driver Imdad, leaving him dead on the spot. At least 10 people were also injured at that time.

Being informed, police recovered the body of the deceased.

Following the accident, traffic was briefly disrupted on the road, but highway police and fire service personnel arrived at the scene upon receiving information, and removed the damaged vehicles, allowing traffic to resume. OC Shakil Ahmed further added that legal action would be taken regarding the incident.

CHATTOGRAM: A female garments worker was killed and four others were injured after being hit by a truck in the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place at Alankar Bitek intersection in the city at around 9:30 am. 

The deceased was identified as Jhumur, daughter of Nasir, hailed from Monpura Upazila in Bhola District. She used to live in a rented house in Faillatali area under Pahartali PS in Chattogram.

A young eyewitness, named Jasim Uddin, said that a truck ran over the woman while she was crossing the road at Alankar Bitek intersection at around 9:30 am. She died on the spot and four others were injured at that time. 

Being informed, police recovered the body of the woman from the scene.

The injured were rescued by locals and admitted to a hospital.

Sub-Inspector of Chattogram Medical College Hospital Police Outpost Noor Alam Ashek confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

SIRAJGANJ: A motorcyclist was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Saidabad Mor area on the Bangabandhu Bridge West highway under the upazila at around 9:30 am. 

The deceased was identified as Md Ismail Hossain, son of Khabir Pramanik, a resident of Kashihata Village in the upazila.

The injured persons are: Mohammad Hakim, 12, son of of Abdur Rahman; and Mst Suraiya Begum, 14. Both of them are the children of Ismail's sister and residents of the aforesaid village.  

It was known that Ismail was taking Hakim and Suraiya to their school in the morning riding on a motorcycle. On the way, a Dhaka-bound bus of 'RK Travels' hit the motorcycle in Saidabad Mor area on the Bangabandhu Bridge West highway at around 9:30 am, which left Ismail dead on the spot and the two seriously injured. 

The injured persons were rescued and immediately taken to Sirajganj 250-bed Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital. 

However, the family members recovered the body of the deceased from the scene and brought it to the house.

Sirajganj PS OC Humayun Kabir confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard. 

DUMURIA, KHULNA: A young man was killed in a road accident in Dumuria Upazila of the district at dawn on Wednesday.

The accident took place in Jiler Danga area on the Khulna-Satkhira highway under the upazila at around 5 am. The deceased was identified as Imran Gazi, 27, son of Azizul Gazi, a resident of Gonali Village under 13 Gutudia Union in the upazila. He was the driver of a nosimon (local vehicle) by profession.

According to local sources, Imran Gazi was carrying vegetable to Khulna City from 13 Gutudia Union in Dumuria Upazila at dawn on his nosimon. On the way, the vehicle faced some inner trouble in Jiler Danga area on the Khulna-Satkhira highway at around 5 am and hit a truck from behind after losing its control over the steering, which left Imran dead on the spot. 

The driver of the killer truck managed to flee the scene along with his vehicle soon after the accident.

Later on, being informed by locals, the family members recovered the body of the deceased and brought it to the house for burial.
