Unseasonal watermelon farming attracts Bogura farmers

BOGURA, Oct 3: Farmers are shifting to cultivation of unseasonal watermelon of yellow and black species in the district for getting higher profits. 

Both species are sweet like honey. The yellow one has been named Madhumala while the black one has been named Black Bengal.
 
Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Bogura Md Matlubor Rahman said, the species can be cultivated on earth and in mulching system. 

In different northern areas including Joypurhat and Bogura, the cultivation of these unseasonal species of watermelon has been expanded, he added. 

At present, markets in Bogura are flooded with such watermelons.

As grower Abdul Goffar of Kundarhat area in Nandigram Upazila got fair prices of the fruit, many farmers are showing interest to its cultivation. 

Madhuma watermelon is also farmed widely in Joypurhat and Dinjapur.

In the last year he got a profit of over Tk 2 lakh. 

If seeds are sowed in Baishakh, fruits can be lifted within three months. 

Watermelons are selling in different haats and bazaars in Bogura and in the town by vans.

A seller Halim is selling the fruit by van on the outskirt of the town. He said, as watermelon of Bugura has been finished, he purchased fruits from Kalai Upazila of Joypurhat at Tk 42 per kilogram (kg). Including transport cost, his purchase cost stands at Tk 52 per kg. He is selling per kg at Tk 60-70 in Bogura town.

Other sellers said, attractive colour of the fruit has attracted customers mainly.

If cultivated on earth, the per bigha farming cost stands at about Tk 26,000, and, if farmed in mulching system, the per bigha farming cost stands at Tk 40,000. After excluding the cost, the profit stands at over Tk 2 lakh per bigha.

DD Matlubor Rahman said, as the farming of unseasonal watermelon is much profitable, the cultivation of the fruit is increasing yearly.
