Fish farmers suffer setback at Dumuria

DUMURIA, KHULNA, Oct 5: Fish farmers of Beel Dakatia in Dumuria and Fultala upazilas of the district suffered huge damages due to water-stranding. 

According to sources, 10,000 fish enclosures in 3,250 hectares (ha) of land were submerged in the beel in these two upazilas.  Croplands, several thousands of houses and roads were also submerged.

The total damage of fish and crops is estimated at about Tk 100 crore.

Marginal fish farmers have been mostly affected.

Fish farmer Alhajj Md Faruq Sheikh of Teligati Mouja in Beel Dakatia area said, "Four of my five enclosures in 12 bighas were submerged; fishes of about Tk  8 crore washed away; all  enclosures of others in the beel were submerged; all fish farmers are in tension; officially none is coming to see our damages."

Former fisheries officer in Dumuria Upazila Md Abu Bakar Siddiq said, rain water damaged 7,500 fish enclosures of 3,036 ha of land in Beel Dakatia. 

The damage in the Dumuria part of the beel will be of about Tk 45 crore, he added.

Marginal fish farmers have been given advice for removing water from their enclosures.

Fultana Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md Selim Sultan said, in Fultala part of Beel Dakatia, 7,500 fish enclosures of 715 ha of land were submerged; the fish damage is estimated at over Tk 5.5 crore.

"We advised fish farmers to surround their enclosures by nets," he added. 

"We are preparing a list of affected fish farmers. If there is any government assistance in future, affected fish farmers will be assisted according to the list," he added.

Dumuria Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Insad Ibne Amin confirmed the damage in Beel Dakatia in the upazila.

Out of total 500 ha of croplands, 200 ha of paddy and vegetables were damaged, he added.
