35 detained on different charges in 14 districts

A total of 35 people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in 14 districts - Habiganj, Rajshahi, Thakurgaon, Rangpur, Kishoreganj, Joypurhat, Moulvibazar, Narayanganj, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Bogura, Munshiganj, Mymensingh and Satkhira, in recent times. 

HABIGANJ: A local leader of Awami League (AL) in the district was arrested by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday night in a case filed over the murder of Mostak during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The arrested man is Sankha Subhra Roy, labour affairs secretary of District AL and general secretary (GS) of Habiganj Zilla Motor Malik Group Sangstha.

Alamgir Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station (PS), said that RAB members arrested Subhra Roy from near Shaistaganj new bridge area at night.

Sankha Subhra Roy was produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Fakhrul Islam on Thursday afternoon and the court sent him to jail, said Habiganj Court Police OC Nazmul Islam.

Earlier, Mostak was shot dead during a clash with AL men in Habiganj Town during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4. 

In this incident, SM Mamun filed a murder case against hundreds of AL leaders and activists including former Member of Parliament (MP) Abu Zahir on August 22.

RAJSHAHI: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained two Indian nationals from Yusufpur border outpost area under Charghat Upazila in the district on Wednesday.

The arrested were Ainal Haque, 55, and Shoaib Nabi Sheikh, 40, both hailed from Lalkup Village under Sagarpara PS in Murshidabad District, West Bengal, India.

The two Indian nationals had crossed the Padma River and entered approximately 500 yards into Bangladesh territory from the border pillar on Wednesday afternoon, said Lt Col Matiul Islam Mondal, commander of BGB's 1st Battalion in Rajshahi.

The detainees were handed over to Charghat PS for legal action.

Lt Col Matiul Islam Mondal also said that surveillance and patrolling along the Rajshahi border was intensified to prevent illegal entry from India.

THAKURGAON: Police arrested former lawmaker of Thakurgaon-2 constituency Dabirul Islam from an AL leader's residence at Ruhea Union in Baliadangi Upazila of the district early Wednesday in an extortion case filed. 

Superintendent of Police (SP) in Thakurgaon Sheikh Zahidul Islam said that Dabirul was apprehended at around 2:30 am on Wednesday and was taken into custody of Ruhea police.

On September 3, a man, named Habibul Islam Bablu, filed an extortion case against 28 people including Dabirul Islam and his elder son Mazharul Islam Sujan over occupying around 90 acres of land in Berojgari Mouza in Baliadangi Upazila.

The complainant alleged that Dabirul and the other accused demanded Tk 10 crore from him.

The SP also said that Dabirul Islam has also been accused in a case filed over killing four BNP leaders and their associates in Thakurgaon on August 5.

According to the case statement, four BNP leaders and their associates were burned to death in Thakurgaon during the mass uprising. 

Police sources said that Dabirul Islam is scheduled to be produced before the court on Thursday.

RANGPUR: Rangpur Metropolitan Police on Wednesday arrested former vice-president of the city unit AL Shah Md Nabi Ullah Panna in connection with the fruit seller Merajul murder case.

"We arrested Panna from his residence in Khamarpara area of the city in the early morning," said Kotwali PS OC Md Ataur Rahman.

Panna is an accused in the murder case of fruit seller Meraj, who was shot dead when police and AL leaders and activists attacked the students and people in the anti-discrimination student-people movement on July 19 last in the city.

"Meraj was shot dead. Ambia Khatun, mother of the deceased, filed the murder case accusing 21 people on August 18 last in the court. Panna has been arrested in that case. There are several cases against him," said the OC.

"We will produce Panna before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court with a 10-day remand prayer," the OC added.

KISHOREGANJ: Members of RAB arrested three local leaders of the AL during the last 24 hours in the district till Wednesday. 

The arrested men are District Unit GS of the party MA Afzal, Tarail Upazila Unit President Azizul Haque Motahar and its GS Giashuddin Lucky.

Kishoreganj Sadar Model PS OC Md Torikul Islam said that members of RAB arrested MA Afzal from his house in the district town in the morning.

A case was filed against him over attack on anti-discrimination student movement men.

Besides, Azizul Haque Motahar was held at his Dhala Village in Tarail Upazila on Tuesday night in a case filed with Kishoreganj Sadar Model PS and GS Lucky arrested at Kalna Village, said Tarail PS OC Sohel Mia.

JOYPURHAT: Members of RAB arrested two youths with equipment used for making counterfeit notes from Barmanpara area here early Tuesday.

The arrestees were identified as Md Arafat Azizul Haque, 20, son of Anisur Rahman of Mulgram Village under Kalai Upazila in Joypurhat, and Ahasan Ullah Riad, 16, son of Al Amin Ripon of Rangamati area under Dhamoirhat Upazila in Naogaon.

The RAB personnel also seized fake notes of Tk 35,900 from their possession.

NARAYANGANJ: One of the key accused of sensational Twaki murder case in the district has been arrested by the members of RAB-11.

Accused Abdullah Al Mamun alias Jamai Mamun was arrested from Chittagong Road area in Siddhirganj of the city on Tuesday.
RAB's Assistant Director ASP Sanat Barua stated it in a press release.

The press release said that Abdullah Al Mamun had been hiding in Dhaka for a long time. At the night on October 1, he was trying to go to Ramgarh of Khagrachhari District from Dhaka in guise of Tabliq Jamaat. Acting on a tip, the accused was arrested from a Khagrachari-bound bus.

Meanwhile, following the arrest, the RAB-11 pleaded to the court to place the accused on remand sending him to a district and sessions judge court.

GAIBANDHA: A fugitive convict of life-term jail sentence in a dacoit case of Fulchhari in the district has been arrested after long 36 years. 

Abdul Moti, 60, was arrested from Debirpat Bazar in Saptibari Union under Aditmari Upazila in Lalmonirhat District on Tuesday morning, said Fulchhari PS OC Razifuzzaman Basunia.

Arrested Abdul Moti is an inhabitant of Dakshin Rasulpur Village under Fulchhari Upazila.

Fulchhari PS OC Razifuzzaman Basunia said that on March 26, 1988, a regular case was filed against three miscreants for committing the robbery. After filing of the case, Abdul Moti went into hiding and remained fugitive for long 36 years avoiding law enforcers.

Acting on a tip, at the directive of Gaibandha District Police, a police team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Qayyum arrested him at about 5 am on Tuesday. The convict was produced before the Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge Court in the early afternoon.

MOULVIBAZAR: Members of RAB detained former lawmaker for Sirajganj-2 Jannat Ara Henry and her husband Labu Talukdar, former chairman of Sirajganj Zilla Parishad, from the district on Monday.

RAB-9 members detained them from a house in the Sonapur area in Moulvibazar, where the couple had been hiding since the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led AL government on August 5.

DINAJPUR: A total of 10 people were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district recently.

Members of BGB have detained five Bangladeshi nationals including a child when they were attempting to enter India illegally though a border in Biral Upazila of the district.

The detained are: Shri Panchanan Chandra Roy, 33, a resident of Tangua Village of Khansama Upazila in Dinajpur District, his wife Taapsee Rani Roy, 28, and their 3-year-old son Deepta Chandra Roy; Shri Tapu Chandra Roy, 19, son of Paresh Chandra Roy of Sujalpur Village of Birganj Upazila in the same district; and Paulina Hemram, 14, daughter of Haren Hemram of Brindabanpur Village under Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi.

BGB-42 Battalion Commander Lt Col Ahsan Ul Islam confirmed the detention adding that the five were held in Mouchusa Village Dipapara, 300 yards of Main Border Pillar 329 / Sub Pillar 8-S inside Bangladesh, while trying to enter India illegally.

Later on, a case was filed against them and handed over to Biral PS, the BGB official added.

On the other hand, police arrested five robbers in connection with committing a robbery in a garage after tying up its night guard in Sadar Upazila of the district recently.

The arrested persons are: Shambaru Das, 26, Sree Dipu Chandra Das, 30, Sree Sujon Das, 27, Md Alamgir Hossain, 36, and Md Dulal Hossain, 36. 

It was known that a group of robbers entered the garage of Messrs Abir Motors at Chuniapara under Shashla Union in the upazila recently, and looted valuables including Tk 3.5 lakh in cash.

In this connection, the garage owner Md Abdul Majid, being the plaintiff, lodged a case with Dinajpur Kotwali PS accusing 12 to 13 unidentified people.

Following this, police arrested Shambaru Das from Ranirbandar area in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district.

According to the information given by him, the law enforcers then arrested the rest four robbers after conducting separate drives.

All of the arrested were produced before the court.

Kotwali PS OC Sheikh Farid Hossain confirmed the matter, adding that the arrested robbers are accused in a number of cases filed with different PSs.  

NANDIGRAM, BOGURA: Police arrested two thieves along with a pickup van and four cows from Nandigram Upazila in the district recently. 

The arrested people are: Jahidul islam jahid, 42, a resident of Maltinagar area in Nandigram Upazila; and Bazlur Rashid, 50, a resident of Sahjanpur Upazila in the district. 

They were arrested from Dhonut area in the upazila. 

Nandigram PS OC Tariqul Islam confirmed the matter, saying that two people were arrested along with four stolen cows and a pickup van. 

Later on, the arrested men were produced before the court, the OC added.

MUNSHIGANJ: Police arrested six members of an inter-district robbery group while they were preparing to commit robbery on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Gazaria Upazila of the district recently.

The arrested people are: Aminul, Masum, Saiful, Shakib, Rakib. All of them are hailed from Narayanganj, except Rubel, who is a resident of Pirojpur District.

Gazaria PS OC Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the information.

Ha said that acting on a tip-off, a team of the law enforcers conducted a drive in Alipura area on the highway and arrested the robbers.

At that time, police also seized a pick-up van, a Chapati knife, two knives, and a pipe from their possession, the OC added.

BHALUKA, MYMENSINGH: Members of RAB arrested Khalilur Rahman, president of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League recently.

He was arrested from Bhaluka Upazila in the district. 

The arrested person is Khalilur Rahman, son of Md Abdul Awal, hailed from Kendua Upazila in Netrakona District. 

Assistant Superintendent of RAB-9 Md Mashiur Rahman Sohel confirmed the arrest in a press release.

The RAB official said that Khalilur is an accused in a case filed with the Kotwali PS under Sylhet Metropolitan Police. He was handed over to the PS following his arrest.

RAB-9's intelligence activities and operations are ongoing to arrest other absconding suspects in the case, the official added.

SATKHIRA: Members of BGB have detained two Indian nationals who intruded into Bangladesh territory allegedly in drunken state with a pickup van through Bhomra Land Port in the district recently.

The detained persons are: pickup van driver Prokash Sarkar, 39, son of Suranjan Sarkar, and his helper Dilu Sarkar, 20, son of Bidhu Sarkar, both hail from Gourangonagar Village in Uttar-24 Pargana District of West Bengal in India.

According to a media release signed by Lt Col Md Ashraful Haque, commandant of the BGB-33 Battalion in Satkhira, the pickup van ploughed into the Integrated Checkpost (ICP) gate at the port, three road dividers, a crossing gate and one motorbike.
Noticing this, a team of the BGB led by on-duty Nayek Md Jihad detained them and seized the vehicle.

Later on, a meeting was held between BGB's Bhomra Commandant Afzal Hossain and India's Border Security Force (BSF) Commandant Nabin Kumar in this regard.

The BGB strongly registered a protest.

In response, the BSF official expressed regret for this saying that the drunken people damaged three to four motorbikes and broke two ICP gates there.

A process was underway to hand them over to the police station concerned to take legal action in this regard, the press release added.
