Santhia growers expect bumper ginger in bagging system

SANTHIA, PABNA, Oct 5: Growers and agriculture department in Santhia Upazila of the district are expecting bumper yielding of ginger in bagging system.

According to sources at the Department of  Agriculture Extension-Santhia, this year,  for the first time, ginger has been cultivated in 31,500 bags in the upazila, with a ginger production target of about 47,500 kilogram (kg) to 95,000.'

Per bag cultivation cost stands at Tk 20-30, with per bag production target of 1-3 kg. Market price of per kg ginger is at least Tk 120-200.

Grower Akhtaruzzaman of Chhondah Village at Nandanpur Union said, "In cooperation with upazila agriculture officer, I cultivated ginger in 600 bags on three decimals of my mango orchard at about Tk 50,000. I hope to get at least 600 kg ginger or a sale of about Tk 1.20 lakh. If the yielding is good, I will increase my ginger farming in the next year."

Shafiuzzaman Jewel of Mehedinagar Village, Mahbubul Islam of Paikorhati Village, Sohel Sardar of Chinanari Village, Jahed Ali of Tethulia Village, Aslam Uddin of Bhainapara Village, Sima Khatun of Shamukjani  Village, and Jorna Khatun of Khaloibhara Village have cultivated ginger in 500 bags each. 

Besides, many have cultivated ginger in the upazila.
 
In ginger farming in bags soil, sand, cow dung and granular insecticide, vermicompost and ash are used.

After 22-25 days of seed farming, sprouting starts. Within 7-8  months, ginger can be collected.

Santhia Agriculture Officer Sanjib Kumar Goswami said, "It is possible to ensure proper use of fallow land by cultivating ginger in bags.  We hope good yielding of ginger in bags."
