Hasina's ex-principal secretary Azad remanded in murder case

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's former principal secretary and former lawmaker from Jamalpur-5 constituency Abul Kalam Azad has been placed on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim in the capital in 2023.

Dhaka Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jiadur Rahman passed the order on Sunday as police produced Azad before the court and pleaded for a 10-day remand.

Earlier, on October 5, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Abul Kalam Azad from Dhanmandi.

According to the case documents, BNP called grand rally on October 28, 2023. Awami League also called a peace rally in the capital. At one stage, Awami League activists with the help of police attacked BNP's rally in Nayapaltan, killing Shamim on the spot.
The case was filed with Paltan Police Station in Dhaka on September 24, 2024.
