Lightning kills four in Bogura, Laxmipur, Barishal

Four people were killed and five others injured by lightning strikes in separate incidents in three districts - Bogura, Laxmipur and Barishal, on Saturday.

BOGURA: Two teenage boys were killed and five others injured after a streak of thunderbolt hit them in Sherpur Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place in Joyla Aladi Beelpara Village of the upazila at around 4 pm. 

The deceased were Morsalin, 18, son of Abu Taleb of Khanpur union, and Jahidul Islam Jahid, 17, son of Mawla Box, a resident of Joyla Aladi Village in the upazila.

The injured persons are: Rustam Ali, son of Jahurul Islam, Jakaria, son of Moinuddin, Shihab, son of Abdus Sattar, Russel, son of Ashraful Islam, and Mirazul, son of Aftab Uddin. All of them are residents of Joyla Joan Village in the upazila.

According to local sources, a group of teenage boys were playing football on the bank of the Bangali River in Joyla Aladi Beelpara Village of the upazila in the afternoon amid heavy raining. At around 4 pm, a streak of thunderbolt struck them, leaving Jahid dead on the spot and six others critically injured.

Local people then rescued the injured, but Morsalin died on the way to a nearby hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies of the deceased.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Police Station (PS) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies will be handed over to the families of the deceased after completing necessary actions.

RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR: A fisherman was killed by lightning strike in Ramgati Upazila of the district on Saturday. 

The accident took place in Balurchar area of the upazila in the afternoon. 

The deceased was identified as Md Khabir, a resident of Alekjandar Janata Bazar area in the upazila.  

It was known that a streak of lightning struck on Kabir while he along with other fishermen was catching fish in the Meghna River place in Balurchar area of the upazila in the afternoon, which left him dead on the spot. 

Ramgati PS OC Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

BARISHAL: A fisherman was killed by lightning strike in Mehendiganj upazila in Barishal district on Saturday morning. 

The accident took place in the Meghna River in Ulania Asha Village of the upazila at around 6 am. 

The deceased was identified as Kabir Majhi, 35, son of Abdur Rahman Majhi, a resident of the area. 

It was known that a streak of lightning struck on Kabir Majhi while he along with other fishermen was catching fish in the Meghna River in the area in the morning amid rain, which left him critically injured. 

Critically injured Kabir Majhi was then rescued by the local people and immediately taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. 

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as per their request.
