BKB has no liquidity shortage, branches becoming profit making: MD Shawkat Ali Khan

Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) claims it has no liquidity crisis while deposit collection performance is going well at a time it has also taken effective steps to collect default loans. 

The bank stands fifth in remittance collection in July-September period - the first three month of the fiscal 2024-25 while its number of loss making branches has come down and loan disbursement exceeded target set by Bangladesh Bank.

Out of 1038 branches, BKB claims its 465 branches are loss-making now and 135 converted to  profit making. As a result, the number of loss-making branches has been reduced to 330 and the number will further decrease.. 

Speaking exclusively with The Daily Observer on Saturday, BKB Managing Director Shawkat Ali Khan highlighted the outstanding performance of the bank at a time when most banks are sick and suffering from liquidity crisis.

He said BKB received more than Tk 4000 crore in remittance in July-September period of the current fiscal posting a 35 percent growth. Its remittances collection in the last fiscal was about Tk 7,800 crore earning 10th position among domestic and foreign bank.

Shawkat Ali who joined the bank as managing director 16 months ago highlighted that the bank's remittance collection is increasing ever since he joined it as the chief executive. It was Tk 5924 crore in fiscal 2023.

He said, BKB has already disbursed Tk 1430 crore agricultural loan in the first three months of the current fiscal, which is an increase of 20 percent out of an annual target of  Tk 7200 crore for 2024-25. 

In the outgoing financial year, BKB's own loan disbursement target was Tk 11,000 crore and Tk 8,896 crore was disbursed. He said as a specialized bank BKB is performing a spectacular role in agricultural financing. 

He said, he has attached top most priority to deposit collection. In case of loan disbursement, quality loans are being distributed checking quality standards.

He said BKB has introduced a thirty-day Seva month system. Special importance is being given to deposit collection, opening new accounts, loan disbursement, debt and remittance collection in the service month. Seva month will be observed this year as well.

He also the bank is a service oriented bank. If farmer suffers from natural calamities or for any other reason, interest on loan is waived.

Along with that, new loans are given. So that farmer can turn around. Everything that needs to be done for the development of farmer is done through this bank.

Shawkat Ali Khan said he has taken a 100-day program covering deposit collection, opening new accounts, disbursing new loans, collecting loans and even remittances after joining the bank. He achieved comprehensive healing.

In the meantime, the monitoring system has been strengthened for default loans. Besides success in collecting deposits, progress in collection of default and quality of lending has been taken seriously. BKB is not facing any liquidity crunch. 

He said the bank has already gained customers trust. It is in a very good position in the banking sector without liquidity crunch crisis. We have no problem to borrow to pay off foreign debts. 

Shawkat Ali said BKB is focused on customers' service; it operates 17 ATB booth so far and plans to open ATM booth in every district very soon. Credit card and debit card system has been introduced which will facilitate customers to withdraw money from other banks as well as from own booths.

He said initiatives have been taken to launch mobile apps to maintain direct contact with all customers including farmer. He said an initiative has been taken to make all BKB branches online.

Shawkat Ali Khan further said the bank is working on especial initiative to encourage entrepreneurs to set up agricultural industries. Loan assistance is being provided for import of machinery and spare parts in agricultural sector. 

He said, there is no alternative to industrialization and if any entrepreneur comes to Krishi Bank to set up an industry, he is given full support.
