Six killed, 13 injured in road mishaps

Six people were killed and at least 13 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts - Laxmipur, Naogaon, Narail, Mymensingh and Barishal, in three days.

RAIPUR, LAXMIPUR: An expatriate from Raipur Upazila in the district was killed in a road accident in Sydney of Australia on Sunday night.

The accident took place at around 8 pm (local time). 

The deceased was identified as Md Ismail Hossain, son of Amanat Ullah, hailed from Ward No. 1 Khajurtala area under Raipur Municipality.

It was known that Ismail was learning car driving from a friend of him in Sydney City of Australia. The accident occurred at that time, which left Ismail dead on the spot.

Earlier, he went to Australia about a year back and got admission to UTC University in Sydney.

MOHADEVPUR, NAOGAON: Two college students including a coordinator of the recent student movement were killed in a collision between a motorcycle and an auto-van in Mohadevpur Upazila of the district on Sunday evening. 

The accident took place at Dhanjoil intersection in the upazila at around 7 pm.

The deceased were identified as Sarafat Hossain, 22, son of Mahmudul Hasan of Joypur Sardarpara Village and a student of Islamic History at Dhaka College, and Monirul Islam, 23, son of Mobarak Hossain of Gophanagar Village and a student of Shibpur Barendra Degree College.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohadevpur Police Station (PS) Hasmat Ali said that Sarafat was also the coordinator of the recent anti-discrimination student movement in Mohadevpur Upazila.

However, Sarafat and Monirul were returning home in Mohadevpur Upazila from Naogaon District Town on Sunday evening riding on a motorcycle. On the way, their motorcycle collided head-on with a battery-operated auto-van coming from the opposite direction at Dhanjoil intersection. Both of them were thrown off the motorcycle, resulting in their deaths on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies of the two students from the scene.

Legal action would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

NARAIL: A man was killed and another injured in a road accident in Lohagara Upazila of the district on Saturday night.

The accident took place near Kalna Madrasha area on the Lohagara-Kalna-Dhaka highway under the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Md Rifatul Islam, 33, son of Md Belayet Shikdar, a resident of Kundashi area under Lohagara Municipality.

Police and local sources said that the accident occurred near Kalna Madrasha area when a passenger bus hit a motorbike, leaving its rider Rifatul dead on the spot and another injured critically.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

The injured was referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

GOURIPUR, MYMENSINGH: A former army personnel, who was injured in a road accident in Gouripur Upazila of the district, died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Taij Uddin, 60, a resident of Darun Krishnapur Village under Bokainagar Union in the upazila.

According to locals, Taij Uddin was critically injured after being hit by a battery-powered auto-rickshaw on the Gauripur-Shahganj road on September 25 last. Since then, he was receiving treatment at the MMCH.

BARISHAL: A man was killed and at least 12 others were injured in separate road accidents in the district on Friday.

At least 12 people were injured in a head-on collision between two passenger-laden buses in Gournadi Upazila of the district at noon.

The accident took place in Barthy area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway under the upazila.

Gournadi Fire Service Station Officer Md Bipul Hossain said that two buses of 'Balaka Paribahan' and 'Unique Paribahan' were collided head-on in Barthy area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway at noon, which left at least 12 people from the both buses injured.

On information, Fire Service personnel rushed in, rescued the injured, and took them to hospital.

Sub-Inspector of Gournadi Highway PS Qamruzzaman confirmed the incident, adding that both the buses involved in the accident have been seized.

Earlier, a man, who was injured in a road accident in Barthy Union at the dawn of September 28 last, died at a hospital in Dhaka on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Akbar Gharami. 

It was known that a pickup van hit a truck standing on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Gainer Par area under Barthy Union at the dawn of September 28 last, which left Akbar critically injured.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
