DHOUBAURA, MYMENSINGH, Oct 8: Flooding due to heavy rainfall has inundated new localities in Dhoubaura Upazila of the district.

Water-marooned people are passing days in inhuman condition in these deluged localities of the upazila. Locals said, since 1988, they never witnessed such devastating flooding in the upazila.

According to primary estimate, 11,000 hectares of Aman fields have been submerged.

But, in this situation, the relief distribution is taking place inadequately.

The rain continued dropping for the whole Saturday night, deluging Pourakandulia, Goaltala, Baghber, and Dhoubaura Sadar unions in the upazila.  At least 20,000 families were water-confined.

People of submerged houses have taken emergency abodes in shelter centres of Pourakandulia and Dudhoni.

Crises of food and safe water have been severe.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Dhoubaura, in addition to the Aman field submergence, 50 ha of vegetable fields have been submerged in the upazila.

Yet, water has started to recede slowly from border adjacent Ghonshgaon Village and Dakkhin Maizpara Union. In these localities, string current of the Netai River damaged about 50 houses.

Metalised roads in different unions, connected to the Upazila Sadar, have been submerged. Fishes were floated away from numerous ponds.

In the morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Sharmin distributed relief by trawler in Ghonshgaon  Village.

"We have started relief distribution.  If we get relief allocation from the district administration, this will be distributed," she added.

UNO further said, the rain started by 6pm on Thursday and continued for 24 hours, causing the deluge.

Since then people have been undergoing inhuman living condition, she said again.

Now, BNP is also providing relief. BNP Leader Anisur Rahman Manik said,  central BNP Joint Secretary General Sayed Emran Saleh Prince is distributing  relief by going door to door.
