RAJSHAHI, Oct 8: Prices of chilli and vegetables are increasing again in the district.

District administration is hiccupping to prevent the price hiking. There is no shortage of these items in Rajshahi.

Low-income and middle-income people have fallen into disarray.

According to field sources, traders passed the blame on decreased production of these items due to continuous drought and excessive rain.

On Saturday, a visit found momentum trading of essential items in Saheb Bazar, Shiroil, and Sagarpara as it was the public holiday.

Shoppers were seen delighted, but customers were directionless because of the excessive prices.

Chilli price has been double in a week gap.

At present, per kilogram (kg) chilli is selling at Tk 360-380.

Spiny gourd, radish, ridge gourd and okra are selling at Tk 80-120 per kg against last week's Tk 50-60.

Bitter gourd and brinjal are selling at Tk 140 and Tk 100 per kg, higher by Tk 30-50 than before.

Prices of potato, onion, and garlic remain unchanged.

Per kg potato is selling at Tk 60, onion at Tk 90-110, and garlic at Tk 240 and ginger at Tk 280.

Recently, per kg broiler hen price was fixed at retail level by the Agriculture Marketing Department at Tk 180, Sonali at Tk 270 and per dozen egg at Tk 142.

Prices of almost all fishes were increased by Tk 20-40 per kg.

Per kg pangas is selling at Tk 200, Ruhi at Tk 300, silver carp at Tk 220, mrigel at Tk 250, Katla at Tk 350, and Tilapia at Tk 200.

Rice trader Altaf Hossain said, prices of all types of rice have been hiked by Tk 5-7 per kg.

A customer Mahbubul Alam said, prices of all essentials have gone beyond reach of the middle-class people.

"We don't know whether the government has taken any initiative to reduce the essentials' prices," he added.

He further said, "If the current prices continue, there will be no end to our sufferings."

A college student Shahdat Hossain said, "I purchased one kg chilli at Tk 150 in the last month. Now I came to see it selling at Tk 370. On plea of the rain, the price has been hiked."

Vegetable trader Shahinur Rahman said, "Prices of some items have been increased because of rain for several days. We are purchasing these at higher rates and selling at higher prices. We should not be blamed."

Sharmin Sultana, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension-Rajshahi, said, normally the rain causes dropping of flowers to chilli plants.

In over all accounts, the chilli price goes up for this reason, he added.

Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection-Rajshahi Masum Ali said, "Our duty is to monitor whether hoarding and syndicating is going on in any place. If such case is reported,   we shall take action following our regular campaign. It is not our duty to fix price of any product."

If traders resort to trickery in a free market, action will be taken, the official added.
