The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) has entered into a landmark agreement with local consulting firm Innovate Engineering and Development for the implementation of the country's first-ever Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project.

Funded by the World Bank, this project will significantly enhance the reliability and quality of electricity supply across Bangladesh, with a total of 32 MW of storage capacity distributed across four PBSs.
The contract was signed recently on behalf of BREB by Director Altaf, Ashok Kumar, Project Director Awlad and other officials. Innovate Engineering was represented by CEO Rana Masud, who attended the signing alongside the firm's management and business development team, says a press release.

"This project represents a significant step forward in modernizing Bangladesh's power infrastructure," said Rana Masud, CEO of Innovate Engineering and Development.

"We are proud to contribute to a solution that not only strengthens grid reliability but also supports sustainable development and energy security. Together with BREB, we are committed to delivering a future-ready energy system for the nation."

With Bangladesh's electricity demand expected to reach 32 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, the introduction of BESS is seen as a crucial advancement for modernizing and stabilizing the national power grid.

BREB, having nearly achieved universal electrification, will use this project to provide more reliable power, especially during peak demand periods.

The BESS system, which will be deployed in four Power Distribution Societies (PBSs)-Dhaka PBS-1, Narsingdi PBS-1, Mymensingh PBS-2, and Kishoreganj PBS-will deliver 8 MW of storage capacity in each PBS, totaling 32 MW as a pilot basis Project.

The BESS technology will play a key role in peak load management, frequency regulation, voltage control, and overall grid reliability, reducing power interruptions and improving customer service.

The project will ensure better load management, enhanced grid security, and faster restoration times in case of power failures.

Innovate Engineering and Development, with over 17 years of experience in delivering comprehensive engineering consultancy services across diverse sectors -both nationally and internationally with more than 20 countries-, brings significant expertise in power and energy, renewable energy, water infrastructure, port and marine structure, railway, transportation, complex and tall infrastructural projects.

The firm focuses on providing sustainable and Efficient-Effective-Economical (3E) engineering solutions to meet national and international project demands.

This initiative is a major milestone in Bangladesh's transition towards a smarter and more resilient electricity grid. Once completed, the BESS system will provide a modern solution through advanced technology to the country's growing energy needs, benefiting both consumers and the broader economy.
