Separate courts on Tuesday sentenced a total of 13 people to life-term imprisonment and another to 14 years of jail in different cases in three districts - Rajshahi, Khulna and Natore.
RAJSHAHI: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced nine people to life-term imprisonment in a murder case filed in Godagari Upazila in 2023.
Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Mahiduzzaman handed down the verdict at noon.
The condemned convicts are: Isahak Ali, 65, Hasan, 52, Moni Khatun, 26, Mukta Khatun, 32, Zahid Hasan, 22, Nahid Hasan, 25, residents of Durgapur area under Kankanhat Municipality in Godagari Upazila of the district; and Abul Hasnat, 40, Abdul Halim, 28, and Serazul Islam Mia, 30, of Damkura Village.
They were sentenced for the killing Altaf Hossain, a resident of Kankanhat Municipality under the upazila.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Entazul Haque Babu confirmed the matter. He said that the court also fined Tk 50,000 to two of the nine convicts. In default of the payment, they will have to suffer six more months in jail. In addition to life-term imprisonment, another accused was also sentenced to three years' jail in another section.
According to the case statement, the deceased Altaf Hossain was a retired army member. He had a dispute over land with his brother Ishaq Ali for a long time. A settlement meeting was held between the two sides on May 3 in 2023. But the municipal mayor failed to settle the dispute. After everyone had left the municipal office that day, Ishaq Ali attacked Altaf Hussain's house along with his son, daughter and tenants. At that time, Altaf Hossain was beaten merciless and injured.
Later on, Altaf Hossain was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He died on May 6 while undergoing treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit. A murder case was filed by the family of the deceased with Godagari PS in the incident.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against 10 people.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday noon after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
KHULNA: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced four people to life-term imprisonment in a drug case filed in 2011.
At the same time, the court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, and in default of the payment, they will have to suffer one more month of rigorous imprisonment.
Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Sumi Ahmed handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
The condemned convicts are: Abdullah Sheikh of Rampal Nawabpur area in Bagerhat, Zakir Hossain of Dakshin Tutpara area in Khulna City, Mehedi Hasan Tuhin of Sharankhola Golbunia in Bagerhat, and Babul of Mathbaria Upazila in Pirojpur District.
Bench Assistant of the court Subhendu Roy Chowdhury confirmed the matter.
All of the convicts were present in the court when the verdict was announced. Later on, they were sent to Khulna District Jail.
According to the case statement, on April 16 in 2011, a unit of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-6) conducted a drive and recovered phensedyl from a rented house in Chanmari Ahmadiya area in Khulna City. During the drive, the RAB-6 members also detained four people.
In this regard, a case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed with Khulna Sadar PS.
After investigation, police then submitted the charge-sheet to the court, and following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
NATORE: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a young man to 14 years of jail in a case filed with Singra PS over abducting a schoolgirl in 2016.
Natore District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Abdur Rahim handed down the verdict.
The condemned convict is Md Arif, a resident of Sohagbari Village in Singra Upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000.
According to the prosecution, Arif along with his some friends abducted a girl from Sohagbari Village while she was on her way to school on May 24 in 2016. They then took the girl to an unknown place in Bogura District.
In this connection, the victim's mother Aurana Bibi filed a kidnapping case with Singra PS accusing Arif being the plaintiff.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court.
Following this, Judge Abdur Rahim pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
