CHATTOGRAM, Oct 12: Supply of gas from Moheshkhali Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) is expected to increase to 1,000 million cft from October 17.

Petrobangla officials said that a Sship carrying LNG will arrive at Moheshkhali FSRU on  October 16.

The interim government started importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) after a gap of more than three months.

The approval was given at the 6th meeting of the Adviser's Council Committee on Government Procurement.

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presided over the meeting.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, the finance adviser said that the government wants to ensure energy security.

Imported LNG will facilitate running industries as well as trade and commerce, he added.

Following two separate proposals from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the government will procure LNG from the spot market from M/S Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd Singapore at a cost of around Tk 640.16 crore.

Following another proposal, the government would LNG from M/S Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd Singapore at a cost of around Tk 649.59 crore.

Both the LNG cargos would be procured from the spot market under the Master Sale and Purchase Agreement (MSPA).

Accordingly, "Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd started delivering its spot LNG cargo last week.

Bangladesh stopped floating LNG tenders for spot purchases after the first week of July as Summit Group's FSRU went offline at the end of May.

The demand for LNG cargoes had declined from mid-July to the first week of August.

The demand increased later.

Meanwhile, the RPGCL, a subsidiary of state-owned Petrobangla, has been responsible to import LNG from abroad and receive re-gasification service from the existing two LNG terminals in Moheshkhali, one set up by Summit Group and another by US-based Excelerate Energy. Each LNG terminal has a capacity to supply 500 mmcfd gas to the national gas network from which a major portion is supplied to Chattagram.

Presently the demand of gas per day is 3,800 million cft. But the gas supply stands at over 3,000 million cft per day besides less than 2,000 million cft of gas coming from domestic gas fields.  The average gas production was even more than 2,500 million cft at the beginning of 2020, which was 2,200 million cft in 2023.

The government started importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2018.

Currently two FSRUs are operational in Bangladesh, of which one is owned by the Summit Group and the other by Excelerate Energy.
Each of the FSRUs has capacity to re-gasify around 500 mmcfd of LNG.
