International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction observed in districts

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction-2024 was observed on Sunday across the country and the globe in a befitting manner. 

This year's theme of the Day is - "Agami Projonmoke Sakkhom Kori, Durjog Sahanshil Bhavissot Gori" (Empowering the next generation for a resilient future).
 
This theme highlights the role of education in protecting and empowering youth for a disaster-free future.

To mark the Day, different programmes were organized in districts including Gaibandha, Khulna and Panchagarh. 

GAIBANDHA: The Day was observed in the district with a call to remain always ready to tackle disasters during the emergencies.

On this occasion, the district administration and District Relief and Rehabilitation Office jointly organized different programmes in association with a number of non-government organizations including SKS, GUK, FRIENDSHIP, World Vision, Brac, RDRS, SDRS, Care, Save the Children and BDRCS.

In the morning around 11 am, a rally was brought out from Independence Square, and it ended on the ground of Islamia High School after parading the main streets of the town. 

Around 100 flood volunteers trained by the organizations and its official took part in the rally. 

Later on, a discussion meeting was held on the premises of the school. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (General) Dewan Moudud Ahmed attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest.
Presided over by District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, the function was, among others, also addressed by Project Implementation Officer of Sadar Upazila Reazul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Mahmudul Hasan, Head Teacher of Islamia High School Ehsanul Kabir, Brac Representative Mosarrof Hossain, Representative of SKS Foundation Ashraful Alam and Project Manager of BDRCS in Gaibandha Amal Kumar Pramanik.  

The speakers in their speech said that due to geographical location, Bangladesh has become one of the most disaster prone countries in the world and it experiences extreme weather conditions and disastrous hazards including flood, river erosion, drought, cold wave, tornados, and cyclones every year.

Bangladesh is also in the risk of newly added earthquake as it is situated in the seismic zone. High population density, unplanned urbanization and faulty construction of buildings have intensified the risk of causalities, they also said. 

The people of flood and other disaster prone areas located at the chars of Sadar, Fulchhari and Sundarganj upazilas of the district were made aware about handling disaster moments to reduce the loss of lives and properties during any natural calamities through 'Uthan Baithaks' marking the Day at the initiative of the organizations, they also said.  

The ADC (General) in his speech said that as the government is determined to reduce loss of lives and properties across the country; he underscored the need for conducting awareness activity to the people of disaster prone areas to protect them from the hazards anyhow.  

A large number of people including district and upazila level officials, students, teachers, activists of different NGOs and media men took part in the programmes spontaneously.

KHULNA: To mark the Day, the district administration organized different programmes in the city.

A discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the DC office in the city.

Khulna DC Mohammad Saiful Islam was present as the chief guest while ADC (General) Bitan Kumar Mondal presided over the meeting.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Asif Iqbal, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Faruk Hossain Shikder, representatives of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Md Towfiqul Islam and Jagrata Juba Sangha (JJS) Md Mamunur Rashid, and human rights activist Md Abdul Halim, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

District Relief and Disaster Rehabilitation Officer Md Abdul Karim delivered the welcome speech.

DC Md Saiful Islam said, "We suffer from natural disaster as well as man-made disasters and irresponsible behaviour of some people causes suffering for many. There is much to be done to stop the evils of filling up rivers and creating dams by blocking canals. We should remember that the more crucial problem solution must to active."

He also said that many agricultural lands are under water due to flooding in Dakatia Beel in Khulna. Two dredgers and heavy duty pumps are working to remove silt at the entry point of the Sholmari River to solve the problem.

He, however, said to solve the water logging problem, a scheme at a cost of Tk 50 crore has been sent for approval to the authority concern through the Water Development Board. 

Opportunity may be created to overcome the crisis after implemented the project, the DC said, adding that everyone has to work together during natural calamities, so that, fighting with nature is difficult to get up.

Earlier, a rally was brought out in the city where peoples in all walks of life joined. 

Besides, a drill was held on fire and earthquake rescue on the Boyra PWD Secondary School premises. 

PANCHAGARH: In this connection, different programmes were organized in the district.

The district administration brought out a colourful rally from the DC office premises in the morning, and it ended at the same place after parading the main streets of the town.

After the rally, a drill was also held on fire and earthquake rescue marking the Day.
